Deadcode Biography

Though Steve Morgan (Guitar/Prod) and Stephen Sims (Vocals) both have backgrounds in 2000s rock bands, it was their “ethical hacker” day jobs which formed the basis of the friendship at the core of the group.

The two met while hacking expert Steve Morgan, (CTO of pre-eminent Cyber Security company Halborn) was taking a cyber security class from fellow expert, Stephen Sims (SANS Institute). In addition to teaching students and government how to defend against cyber-attacks and bad actors, Sims literally helped write one of the go-to books on hacking. Put simply, these two are the real life Matrix.

Sims was impressed with Morgan’s acumen, but when he realized that beyond hacking they shared similar history in the music industry, their bond was sealed and they knew they had to write songs together. After the course they stayed in touch, connecting over bands, films, and tour stories, eventually trading files remotely, building a small body of work that fused electronic and industrial beats with heavy, melodic, hook-filled rock. From the first song it was clear they had something special, and with a wink to their hacker roots, the two became Deadcode.

After teaming up with manager/A&R Justin Warfield (She Wants Revenge), they focused on three singles, “Fight or Flight”, “Call Out the Liars”, and “Leave It All Behind”. Next they enlisted The Crystal Method, Molchat Doma , and KMFDM to remix the songs. In less than a year they created a visual identity of high concept music videos, great digital content, and a collection of songs which garnered impressive streaming numbers for a band so new.

Eager to keep the momentum, they jumped back into the studio at LA’s famed NRG to finish up their debut LP.
For these friends who live on opposite coasts, that studio time was just what they needed; ideas flowed freely, the writing grew leaps and bounds, and in less than two weeks they emerged from the studio with the full-length LP, Nothing and Nowhere. Mixed by hard rock icon, Tom Lord- Alge, and mastered by the legendary Ted Jensen, the album is wall-to-wall ear worms and sync- ready singles, while also being a true, front to back, “album”- a rarity in today’s climate.

The last release, “Come Undone” is heavy, but faithful reworking of the Duran Duran classic, finding the band at their most introspective, soulful, yet with the characteristic drive and power the band has come to be known for.
The new single “Left You For Dead” is easily the sexiest to date. A heartbreaking lyric set against a pulsing electronic beat, but with the soaring chorus and crunch they do so well. Feat. A guest vocal from Justin Warfield, and a Vampire-themed narrative music video set in an actual underground party, it toes the line between goth and metal, speaking more to the feminine than any song so far.

Spring 2025 sees the long-awaited release of their debut full-length LP, "Nothing And Nowhere" (5/2) backed by shows supporting Filter on select dates in May.

At a time when Nu-Metal is making a comeback, early-aughts rock is more popular than ever, and a new generation of kids are hungry to experience the “millennium” they missed out on, Deadcode strikes the perfect balance of progressive and nostalgia, blending thoughtful lyrics, infectious melodies, danceable beats, and massive riffs for the most hardened purists, or fresh ears looking for something the next real thing.
