Event websiteAbout this concert
Join us for an evening with singer-songwriter Abigail Dowd, who uses the power of songwriting and storytelling to illuminate the natural world and inspire the conservation of Mother Earth.
Join us in person at the Daily Planet Cafe or watch online on YouTube!
Songs give us the ability to weave science and history together in a human language that resonates beyond scientific names and observations. Songs and stories prioritize the people and language of the land, and Abigail will share how she uses her craft to present natural ideas organically and connect to much older oral traditions.
Abigail grew up in the North Carolina Sandhills and will share the role that music and storytelling play in promoting a love for nature, exposing audiences to the science and wonders around us, and preserving the Earth for future generations.
Drawing specifically from the longleaf pine ecosystem, one of the world’s most diverse, Abigail will share songs and talk about the ways they bring together a community to both understand and celebrate the natural environment.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER
Singer/songwriter/guitarist Abigail Dowd grew up under the longleaf pines in the Sandhills region of North Carolina. Known for her storytelling and command of an audience, she has been called “a writer of the highest caliber” (The All Scene Eye). Her soulful voice and unique classical guitar style caught the attention of Acoustic Guitar Magazine, which described the album “Not What I Seem”: “The guitar-driven introspective folk of the 1970s [as] a touchstone, but so are blues and roots rock ’n’ roll.”
Grab a bite from the Daily Planet Cafe and join host Chris Smith and special guests for our monthly Science Cafe. On the third Thursday of every month at 7pm, gather with other curious minds at this after-hours event for an informal presentation and conversation about current science topics with guest experts. The Daily Planet Cafe is open 5–8pm with a full menu during the Science Cafe.
