The Steve Schneck Quartet Biography
Steve Schneck is a jazz musician, band leader and music educator. He plays trumpet and flugelhorn and has performed throughout Chicago for nearly 40 years, including with his own quartet at the 2016 Chicago Jazz Festival, and often at the Jazz Showcase, Chicago’s premier jazz club. Founded in 1990, the Steve Schneck Quartet concentrates on bebop and swing tunes and has produced two albums: Together Again (1994) and Dedicated to You (2012).
Schneck grew up in New York, immersed in jazz and classical music, and with a photo of Louis Armstrong in his bedroom. He studied trumpet and flugelhorn from age 9. Known for his warm sound and melodic solos, Schneck’s musical influences include Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan.
In liner notes for the Quartet’s second album, jazz historian and journalist Neil Tesser wrote that Schneck “continu[es] to hone his musical mastery of the trumpet and its larger and mellower cousin, the flugelhorn. … [This album is for] those who take pleasure in pure and lovely melody, and who treasure the deceptively simple art of carving lapidary gems from the raw materials supplied by the endlessly generous Great American Songbook.”
Listeners share that “This collection is beautiful, evocative and melodious.” “I can close my eyes and imagine that I am in a sophisticated lounge anywhere in the world.” “The sound quality and balance are exceptional, with all instrumentalists feeling the moods and working beautifully together.”
