About this concert
Hannah Macklin presents the "Scarab Beetle" Tour! Renowned vocalist, musician and all-round creative Hannah Macklin returns to the touring circuit with a new body of work and to launch a series of live videos called the “Scarab Beetle” sessions; a sneak peek into what’s to come from her next studio release. An homage to the Ancient Egyptian myth which proclaims the hardworking beetle can transcend the earthly plane, "Scarab Beetle" combines ancient harmonic devices with modern trap-inspired production to send a message of humility and devotion whilst lamenting the hazardous environmental and spiritual states of this world. Hannah herself takes up the bass for these shows and is joined by Magandjin heavies Brandon Mamata (guitar) and Sam Mitchell (drums) who together, pull a dynamic trio sound to present Hannah’s newest body of work, which is steeped in themes of Dreaming, regeneration, God, love and the cosmos. The main support slot will be played by Georgie Rose; who creates music that embodies themes of melancholy, longing and love. Her songs are spacious, rich and soulful with lyrics that seek to understand the complexities of love, and the unknowable aspects of relationships. The show will be opened by Broden Tyrrell, whose Aboriginal roots (together with his love for country, soul and rock music) have shaped his sound and journey. Broden has toured nationally with Tiana Khasi, Los Caracoles and Izy and his voice carries depth and resilience. 7pm: doors 7:30pm: Broden Tyrrell 8:15pm: Georgie Rose 9pm: Hannah Macklin

Hannah Macklin Biography

Hannah Macklin is a multifaceted and highly accomplished artist (vocalist, writer, performer) and producer/creative director who has been creating and performing original music and video, as well as educating and collaborating with a remarkable array of people for over a decade. Winner of the 2016 Grant McLennan Fellowship, Hannah spent 3 months in NYC in 2017 (a city she’d visited twice prior) on an artistic pilgrimage, collaborating with Ray Angry (The Roots) and members of Solange’s band.

She has supported well known Australian band Hiatus Kaiyote (and worked with several of its members), Peaches (USA), Ibeyi (USA), Katie Noonan, Cody ChesnuTT and Fatima (UK). She has also recorded session vocals for Regurgitator, Emma Donovan, BIGYUKI (USA/Japan), Jaala, Laneous, Sampology, Allysha Joy, Barney McAll, Tom Thum and Paul Mac.

Hannah has used several aliases for her original projects, performances, and releases, including “MKO” and “MKO Sun”, (Meanjin, 2012-2016), “Bastard Amber” (Naarm, 2017-2019) and “Laik” (Meanjin, 2019-2021). All releases have now been re-branded under Hannah Macklin.

Hannah advocates for diversity and dreaming and seeks to keep striving towards these as constants in her work. She is as passionate about equality and healing as she is about creation. A graduate of QLD Conservatorium of Music (Jazz Voice), her vocal stylings are greatly influenced by black music and she likes to remain open to discussion about this; however Hannah’s taste extends across pop, rock, electronica and alternative styles. She also delves into researching and transcribing traditional music from cultures outside of Australia.

Hannah currently facilitates two vocal ensembles at the QLD Conservatorium of Music as well as running her own private vocal practice, “Painted Tongue Studio”. Hannah has performed at the Sydney Opera House, The Hordern Pavilion (Sydney - for Mardi Gras
