Mandelbro Biography
Mandelbro is the brainchild of self-taught bedroom producer Bartholomew Joyce.
Mixing the creativity and multi-instrumentalism of LCD Soundsystem and Metronomy
with the attitude and lyricism of Declan McKenna and Caroline Rose, Mandelbro can
only be characterised by its shape-shifting dynamism. Joyce’s voice and stage
presence have been likened to King Krule, with a Paris inflection.
Following the success of Mandelbro’s first solo album “Oneitis” (2021), Joyce invited
Paris-based singer-songwriter Nicolas LBDR to join the project on guitar, with
Mathieu Rabet following on bass and Emmanuel Chevalier on drums. In 2022 they
wrote and recorded their first EP, “Conditions” at Red House studios in La Forestière,
France. With its echoey soulfulness, hopeful crescendos and contagious underlying
dance beats, “Conditions” (2023) hit a darker tone, tackling themes of alienation and
disconnection in the information age and the experience of a world in ongoing crisis.
With “Your House” (2024) and “The Optimist Playbook” (2025), Joyce invented a new
music video format: a mixture of performance, behind the scenes, and philosophical
video essay. Both videos were an instant success online, cementing Mandelbro as a
wildly innovative artistic project and force to be reckoned with.
Calling to the Zeitgeist and the fears for the future as seen from the eyes of the
current generation, Mandelbro is a breath of fresh air, charged with genre-bending
experimentation, heart-felt sensitivity and an infectious optimism.
Mandelbro has toured Europe and the UK with 33 shows in Paris, Amsterdam,
Brussels, Frankfurt, Caen, Reims, Rennes, London, Liverpool and Manchester.
