About this concert
Jazz Cafe Dizzy Rotterdam, are you ready for some Soul and Funk with a Spice of Jazz? Tizaan Alphonso, an internationally acclaimed pianist, singer, and composer, grew up in a musical family, which has given him a deep, personal connection to music, as if it were his true home. Known for his blend of Soul, RnB, Funk, and Jazz, his debut album Feel It (2020) received critical acclaim from both international and local press, with Rolling Stone India describing his jazz as "extraordinary" and Buzz Music (USA) highlighting his natural groove. His latest EP, Take It or Leave It (October 2024), addresses themes such as life, love, hope, racism, and self-acceptance. It features killer sax solos from renowned artists like Tom Politzer (Tower of Power, USA) and Reiner Witzel (DE). In October 2024, Tizaan toured India with his band to promote the EP, gaining new fans along the way. As the leader of the Tizaan Alphonso Collective, an 8-piece band from Maastricht with incredible chemistry, he delivers electrifying performances. Legendary Dutch saxophonist Candy Dulfer frequently plays his music on her radio show Candy's World on Sublime FM. On January 24, 2025, Tizaan had the honor of opening for Candy at Grenswerk, Venlo, and later that night was invited as a special guest to perform with her band! In February 2025, his band also played the after-show to renowned British acid-Jazz band Incognito. Tizaan’s musical journey includes prestigious performances at festivals such as North Sea Jazz, Jammin' Juan (France), and Park City Live in Heerlen, where the Collective played on the main stage and opened for Nile Rodgers. In May 2024, the Collective won the Podiumbeesten competition. Jo Dautzenberg of Stichting Heerlen Jazz describes him as a captivating frontman with the charisma of legends like Freddie Mercury and Herbie Hancock.

Tizaan Alphonso Biography

Critically acclaimed pianist/singer/composer, Tizaan Alphonso has a deep and personal connection with music, strongly connected within his family. Having musicians for parents, making music just feels like being home, where-ever he is.
If he could, Tizaan Alphonso would become the Freddie-Mercury-of-Jazz, or claim to be Herbie Hancock's long lost son. He jokes about these things, yet it is deadly serious. Soul and Funk music has been with him like an extra parent, raising him to this day.

After Tizaan Alphonso’s debut album "Feel It" (2020) and his attempt to revive the glory of Soul, RnB and Funk, Tizaan received praise from the press at home, the USA and India.

"Give in to the Natural Jazzy Groove of Tizaan Alphonso's, New Album 'Feel It' "
- Buzz Music (USA)

"Tizaan Alphonso showcases extraordinary experimental Jazz on his debut LP ‘'Feel It’"
- Rolling Stone Magazine (India)

His musical journey will continue in a new EP called ‘Take it Or Leave it’ (Oct 2024). Tizaan has written the songs on the EP about his life, love and hope, struggles, racism and especially his acceptance of who he is. His story about his home, family and friends is one that is complex, but a rather beautiful story to share on stage through his music.

In Maastricht, he found his family in music: The Tizaan Alphonso Collective. A band
of 8 musicians total. They are really close and all understand the story Tizaan wants to tell with his music. Sometimes you see bands on stage where it’s impossible to sit still and only listen. The Collective is one of them. Every single one of the musicians in his Collective is extremely talented,
and with Tizaan, who will steal the show as frontman, you are in for a party.

From performing solo at corporate events, presenting his band at every pop or jazz competition all the way to playing at the North Sea Jazz festival as part of the Fringe Orchestra ft. Bex Burch. He was invited to perform at Jammin' Juan in France, Jazz Circle Viersen, So What's Next Festival (Eindhoven), Poppodium Volt (Sittard), Les Temps Mêlés (Verviers), Limbo Jazz Express (Cultuurhuis Heerlen), MainStage of Park City Live and continues to grow a fanbase with his catchy debut album "Feel It". The L1 television featured him live for their 'Tot overmaat van
ramp' cultural program during the pandemic. In addition to this, his song "Living in The City" was also featured on radio (Sublime-FM) with the legendary Candy Dulfer.

In May 2024, the Collective won the first edition of the Podiumbeesten competition organized by Vista College Heerlen, and got to open for Nile Rogers on the Mainstage of Parkcity Live Festival 2024

"He showcases himself as a very good pianist and when you hear him singing with his sunglasses on, it’s like watching Stevie Wonder! Really knows how to put himself in the center of a band, in a way that we only know from legends!
His music sits so much in the groove that you can't help but dance along yourself. Hearing him perform is a big mix of Freddie Mercury, Herbie Hancock and Al Jarreau”
