About this concert
These days, Raphaël Pichon and his ensemble Pygmalion are sweeping through the international circuit like a whirlwind. Their concerts can always count on praise and appreciation, something which loyal DE SINGEL visitors will already have experienced. Although the world of Baroque music is where their roots lie, this French choir and orchestra also dazzle in the Romantic repertoire with their unorthodox and convincing interpretations. The English magazine Gramophone described Pygmalion’s playing on the 2016 CD Rheinmädchen with work by Schubert, Wagner and Brahms, among others, as ‘passionate and precise’, exposing ‘unprecedented depths’ in the work of these composers. During this concert, they perform some of Brahms’ most vocal works, including the Schiksalslied (Song of Destiny) for choir and orchestra. After the interval, they shed fresh light on Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, one of the cornerstones of Romantic music. A concert that not only offers great music and exceptional quality, but also a fresh look at Johannes Brahms’ legacy.

Ensemble Pygmalion Biography
The historical performance ensemble Pygmalion is unusual in having been established as a joint choral-instrumental group. This background has equipped the group not only for choral music of various periods but also for the exploration of little-known operatic repertory. Pygmalion was founded in 2006 by Raphaël Pichon and managed to create for itself a singular identity in the international musical landscape, thanks to demanding crossed projects meeting both critical and popular success. For his lyrical works, Pygmalion collaborates with directors such as Romeo Castellucci, Katie Mitchell, Aurélien Bory, Simon McBurney, Jetske Mijnssen, Pierre Audi, Valérie Lesort, Christian Hecq or Michel Fau.
Pygmalion regularly performs on the most prestigious French stages (Philharmonie de Paris, Opéra royal de Versailles, Opéra-Comique, Aix-en-Provence, Beaune, Toulouse, Saint-Denis, Royaumont, Nancy, Montpellier etc.) and international (Köln, Frankfurt, Essen, Vienna, Amsterdam, Beijing, Hong Kong, Barcelona, Brussels etc.).
