R E B E L L E Biography
ReBelle is a formidable ensemble conceived in love, rebellion and the evocative musical talents of Manou Africa and Kalpana Devi.
Manou Africa and Kalpana Devi first joined creative forces composing, recording, performing and touring together in 1994. They’ve released 7 albums and numerous singles. They’ve toured West Africa and across the U.S. playing major festivals including MusikFest in PA, LEAF festival in North Carolina, Bel Chere, Fire Water Festival, The International Festival of Arts and Ideas, Harmonic Convergence, The Bob Marley Festival in Houston, Baia Das Gatas in Cape Verde, Reggae Sunsplash in Senegal, Unifier Festival and more. They’ve shared the stage with all the greats in reggae music including the Marley family, Burning Spear, Toots and the Maytals, Israel Vibration, Culture, Sister Carol, Steel Pulse, Lucky Dube, Skatalites, Midnite and others. They’ve inspired a devoted fan base in the region where they reside, have been voted best reggae band and best world music by popular polls and have regularly packed or sold out iconic venues in their region like the Iron Horse Music Hall.
ReBelle’s musical roots are deeply spiritual and socially conscious. Kalpana and Manou’s powerful voices chant meditations on liberation while instruments propel roots reggae soul. Singing in four different languages: English, Wolof, Creole and French, their original music infuses a mystical mix of commanding African rhythms while their dynamic stage presence is internationally acclaimed.
Kalpana and Manou have created platforms for and facilitated youth leadership and cultural activism and exchanges in schools, universities and community centers through dialogue and the arts; mentored and counseled young people and families in their local, regional and global communities.
They dedicate their music and performances to the light in their signifying purpose, “Love for Humanity”. ReBelle is an awe-inspiring muse, a generator of livity consciousness, freedom and the liberation of our one human family.
