About this concert
🎸 Support Guitars for Girls at Olde Mother Brewing Co. 🎸🎶 📅 Friday, May 16 ⏰ 6:30–9:30 PM 📍 Olde Mother Brewing Co. 526 N. Market St. Frederick, MD Join us at Olde Mother Brewing Co. for an evening in support of Guitars for Girls, an initiative founded by Katie Powderly of Red-Winged Blackbird Records to encourage female-fronted bands and songwriting by getting guitars into the hands of young women in Frederick and greater Appalachia—regardless of financial background. A portion of the brewery’s sales from the evening will be donated to the cause, and that’s not all—on Saturday, May 18, Classic Electric Tattoo is hosting a special companion flash event featuring affordable tattoo designs themed around girls playing guitar and upright bass, cowgirl boots, and more. At the end of the day, they’re handing over those proceeds to help fund our mission. 🐦‍⬛ Our goals for this fundraiser: 🐦‍⬛ • Gift at least one guitar to a girl in Frederick and one in greater Appalachia • Launch a dedicated website + custom URL • Fund posters and ads to spread awareness and gather applicants • Stretch goal: Cover music lessons for recipients with financial need—supporting not only the girls, but also the working musicians who rely on supplemental teaching income 🎫 Tickets are available at multiple price points to account for variations in ability to pay. We don't want anyone excluded because they cannot afford to come. 🍻 Come out, raise a glass, hear some great music, and help make a lasting impact. 🍻 Music by Katie Powderly + The Unconditional Lovers and The Fly Birds. About Katie Powderly + The Unconditional Lovers: This will be The Unconditional Lovers' first public performance since The Weinberg Center in 2019 supporting The Steel Wheels. The Unconditional Lovers is Katie Powderly's electric band. They play Katie's original songs which are a blend of country, Americana, and rock, with bluegrass influences. The press have described Katie's music as similar to Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, and Aiofe O'Donovan. This project is more in the vein of Emmylou Harris than Gillian Welch, and features drums, electric and acoustic guitars, keys, and electric bass. Katie has two albums out now on streaming platforms (Slips of the Tongue and Live by the Song, Die by the Song) with another LP featuring The Unconditional Lovers on the way. katiepowderly.com Listen:"Tobacco" https://found.ee/d5HjVN "My Mourning Dove" https://found.ee/xnE0a "Revolving Door" https://found.ee/n0z2lI About The Fly Birds: The Fly Birds are a trio of Appalachian mountain sirens whose soaring harmonies hover atop a bed of clawhammer banjo, acoustic guitar, and upright bass. For fans of Gillian Welch, Neil Young, and traditional American music. Their original songwriting is full of rich storytelling, and their covers have audiences singing along, enraptured. You will not hear a more ethereal band of tight-knit musicians like this anywhere else. Watch: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1J2nWrCZNt/ ❓❓❓FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: ❓❓❓ Q: Are you a nonprofit? Not at this time. After consulting with both my tax firm and my attorney, we decided that forming a nonprofit wasn’t the wisest move—especially given the current climate around grant funding. Starting a nonprofit would also mean forming a board and restructuring my business, which would slow down our momentum and add overhead costs. Right now, staying nimble means I can focus more energy on getting guitars into the hands of girls who need them. Q: Can I still donate? Yes, and thank you so much for your support! You can donate directly through the link below and simply select “Guitars for Girls” from the dropdown menu: 👉 https://www.paypal.com/donate/... Just like with my “I Believe in Appalachia” Hurricane Helene relief fundraiser, I’ll be sharing a financial breakdown after the fact—so you know where your money went and how it helped. Transparency is important to me. So far we've raised $125 for this year's efforts from two separate donors. Q: Who have you helped so far? We’ve given out our very first guitar to an incredible young girl named Andy. You can read more about the project here: 👉 https://www.redwingedblackbirdrecords.com/guitars-for-girls Q: Can I donate a physical guitar? While I so appreciate the generosity, I’m currently not able to accept guitar donations directly. I don’t have the space to store them or the resources to coordinate repairs and deliveries. Many of the guitars offered also need some TLC, and I simply don’t have the capacity to manage those logistics while juggling my gig schedule and day-to-day work. For now, the best way to support is by contributing financially. This allows me to purchase new or fully functional instruments and ship them directly to the girls who need them—no storage, repairs, or delays needed. Q: Will there ever be a way for people to donate used guitars? That’s the dream! Eventually, I’d love to build a “Connections” page on the website. It would work like a bulletin board—where people can list guitars they’re willing to donate, and families can reach out directly to coordinate pickup. That way, I don’t have to be the middleperson for every connection, and more girls can get matched with instruments faster. If you’ve got more questions, I’m all ears. And if you’ve already supported the project—thank you. From the bottom of my heart. You’re helping change lives, one note at a time. 🎶 🐦‍⬛ With gratitude, 🐦‍⬛ Katie P

The Unconditional Lovers Biography

Weaving together the cutting truths of folk lyrics and the pulse rhythms of Americana, The Unconditional Lovers put to sound the resilient heartbeat of life — the highs of love, the lows of desperation and the miles stretching between.

Led by songwriter Katie Powderly, The Unconditional Lovers document a journey of reconciliation with hurt and the redemptive transcendence of forgiveness. The group is currently booking shows for the 2020 festival season and recording a full-length album.

Powderly has performed on NPR and PBS and in festivals, barrooms and opera houses across the country, from New York to Colorado and from Tennessee to Texas. She has shared the stage alongside Tony Rice, Del McCoury Band, Lake Street Dive, Langhorne Slim, The Black Lillies, The Steel Wheels and others.

The Unconditional Lovers formed in 2013 after Powderly moved to Frederick, Maryland, a small town tucked in the shadow of the Appalachian Mountains. With a sound compared to Gillian Welch (Isthmus, Madison, WI) and Gram Parsons (City Paper, Rochester, NY), Powderly formed the band in 2013 with Kevin Etzler (drums), Colin Shultzaberger (keys), and, after a few initial changes, solidified their lineup with Neil Durr (guitar) and Evan Durr (bass).

The group combines years of experience and formal training in a variety of genres, including jazz, classical, hip-hop and rock to bring a new flavor to the Americana scene.

The Unconditional Lovers’ album, Black Midwestern Skies, will be out in 2020. Powderly released Slips of the Tongue (Red-Winged Blackbird Records, 2012) independently on her own label but is looking for further support from a larger label for her next release.
