Sumner Biography

Sumner are trailblazing a new sound from lutruwita / Tasmania, captivating both national and international audiences. With over 10 million streams and counting, the alternative electronic duo, comprised of Chloe Wilson and Jack McLaine, have generated significant hype with their mesmerising records, backed by a raw and high-energy live show.

Sumner’s music fuses left-field, intricate electronic production with sincere songwriting. With Chloe’s first instrument being the drums and Jack’s multi-instrumentalist production approach, they bring a unique live-instrumentation background to electronic music. Creating from their home in lutruwita / Tasmania, the duo’s music is deeply influenced by their surroundings. Their introspective songwriting feels largely inspired by the distinctive landscape at their end of the world.

The story of Sumner’s biggest single to date, 2021’s Stranded, is rooted in serendipity. While supporting PNAU, the hitmakers behind Elton John and Dua Lipa’s Cold Heart, during a show in Tasmania, Nick Littlemore of PNAU recalled: “We shared a stage at the Forth Pub on a sweet breezy day a few years back. We were struck by their fierce intensity. Chloe commanded the stage, conjuring notes of Chrissie Hynde, Iggy Pop, and Karen Finley. Jack, the uber-cool, multi-instrumental wonder, dazzled on any synth, bass, or guitar he picked up and played.”

One of the songs performed that night, an early version of what would become Stranded, caught the attention of Nick and Peter of PNAU. A week later, they were in a studio in Sydney, producing the record. Stranded, co-written and produced by PNAU, led to Sumner’s signing with Lab78, a label co-founded by Nick and Peter of PNAU in partnership with the Australian indie label Etcetc, propelling the duo to new heights. With over 3 million streams and extensive airplay, the track quickly became one of Triple J’s most-played songs.

Sumner have performed at some of Australia’s premier festivals, including Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival, Wine Machine, For The Love, Party in the Paddock, and Panama. They’ve also supported PNAU, DMA’s, The Wombats, Holy Holy, Boo Seeka, San Cisco, and SAFIA, leaving audiences consistently wanting more of their addictive live show.

Sumner are set to close out 2024 with two new singles that will pave the way for their highly anticipated EP, due in early 2025. On top of new music, the duo will be joining Empire of the Sun on tour, an exciting opportunity to showcase their live energy alongside one of Australia’s most iconic electronic acts. With these releases and performances, Sumner are ready to step into 2025 stronger than ever, with their unique sound continuing to captivate audiences far and wide.
