Quique Escamilla Biography
JUNO Award-winning, Quique Escamilla, is a Maya-Zapotec singer-songwriter born and raised in the tropical land of Chiapas, Mexico. Today he is an international touring artist and producer based in Toronto, Canada.
Quique breaks down language barriers through his powerful voice and passionate delivery while fusing traditional Mexican and Latin American rhythms, such as ranchera, huapango and cumbia—along with contemporary elements of folk, rock, reggae and blues.
His latest album, Encomienda, is thematically aimed to denounce the abuses of this early period of colonization in the Americas. Musically, it represents Escamilla's own mestizaje of modern-day sounds and rhythms of the Americas. Quique passionately crafted this to elevate the world's diversity of culture, colour, race and language. His songs tell stories designed to support and strengthen Indigenous Peoples' voices, their untold realities and stories across the Americas, while aiming to help decimate the impacts of colonization, racism and xenophobia around the globe.
"Every performance is my opportunity to stimulate the human conscience and intellect, with potential to help effect positive change in our world"—Quique.
