About this concert
Faris Ishaq is the undisputed Master of the ney flute, rooted in the traditional shepherd and Dabka dance music of Palestine and glorifying now in the transformational inspiration of Coltrane. This will be his fourth outing with the ‘ever adaptable’ (Tony Benjamin) British European Jazz Ensemble who’s members Knud Stuwe on oud and David Mowat trumpet met him in Occupied Palestine. Together they create ecstatic music impossible for any force to besiege. Drawing on their previous gigs, there’ll be new material arising from the existential crisis of Palestine. “Such a privilege to hear master musicians and see them perform with such dedication. One of the best musical experiences I have ever had. Their music seems to come from pain yet is full of hope.” (St George’s Bristol Audience member Faris Ishaq – ney, sung and spoken word, percussion David Mowat - trumpet, flugel, spoken word Tim Funnell – piano Pasquale Votino – double bass Paolo Adamo - drums Knud Stuwe – guitar, oud Two sets 8pm to 8.50pm 9.10pm to 10pm approx Watch this space for the chance of a ney flute workshop tbc “Faris Ishaq and BEJE created complex beautiful original music and gave a vivid glimpse into the rich culture of Palestine” Red Brick Building management “A really lovely concert with top musicianship and a wonderful atmosphere. The sound of the Nay flute just knocked me out. I have the CD. Keep it all coming!” Dave Merrick jazz musician and promoter “All top musicians. Their solos (and ability of playing together) speak for themselves. The maestria of Faris on the nay flute is simply amazing. Nothing can shake him, everything seems to flow so naturally, even his voice...the crescendo at the end was just unforgettable! A very rich evening with great tunes, wonderful improvisations, brilliant solos and a relaxed atmosphere. Come again soon! “ Bernard Dufresne Entry requirements: no age restrictions (under 18s to be accompanied by an adult over 21yrs, 1:1 ratio)

Faris Ishaq from Beit Sahour, Palestine is a world renowned player of the nay reed-flute. Together with a fine ensemble including David Mowat (Switzerland/UK) trumpet,, Knud Stüwe (Germany) guitar, oud, Tim Funnell (UK) piano, Federico Leonori (Italy) bass, Paolo Adamo (Italy) drums he provided an extraordinary evening of music at the lovely Old School Room venue in the Somerset village of Curry Rivel. Faris Ishaq's desire for the 'Siblings or Fools' tour, an echo of the words of Martin Luther King in 1963, "live together as brothers or perish together as fools", is to show that musical forms such as jazz can be unified across cultures while challenging any notion of limitation. Faris explained that the history of the revered nay is rooted within Palestinian culture and far beyond. In the performance this evening the flexibility of this instrument was revealed, for example drawing on the influence of John Coltrane or taking the audience on an extraordinary musical journey around 'My Favourite Things' from the 'Sound of Music'. There was also a powerful, heartbreaking poem, 'Wadi Gaza' by Ibrahim Yaghi a poet based in Gaza, which was accompanied by the ensemble. The skills of the accompanying musicians were also showcased throughout the evening, which for me showed the generosity and authenticity of Faris Ishaq in his quest to reveal the flexibility of the nay in a tapestry of musical forms. The soaring, expressive, poignant and percussive call of the nay in the hands of this virtuoso Palestinian performer will be long remembered. An unforgettable experience. Dave Clinch

Faris Ishaq Biography

Palestinian Nay Master, Percussionist, and Composer, charts unexplored territories with the Nay, an ancient Middle Eastern flute dating back to 5000 B.C. Rooted in his Palestinian heritage and passion for the Nay, Faris celebrates its cultural legacy in today’s modern musical landscape.

Faris is renowned for revitalizing traditional Palestinian shepherd playing, known as 'Tashbib,' while pioneering contemporary jazz. His rich and subtle use of modern folk influences with jazz highlights the Nay’s versatility. With an evocative and improvisational approach, Faris plays the Nay while simultaneously accompanying himself on leg-percussion, blending lyrical melodies, rhythmic beats, and captivating sound effects. With three albums to his credit, he has performed at prestigious festivals and venues, including Kings Place, and the Monterey, Panama and London Jazz Festivals.

Born in 1993 in Bethlehem, Palestine, Faris taught himself to play the Nay, driven by curiosity to explore its sound in diverse musical contexts. Awarded a full scholarship to study Global Jazz Music at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Faris has collaborated with Grammy Award-winning jazz artists such as John Patitucci on their single “Supplication” and has been featured as a recording artist on the new “Assassin’s Creed: Mirage 2023,” composed by Brenden Angelides and nominated for BAFTA Film Awards.
