Ruth Notman Biography

Ruth Notman is a folk singer/songwriter from Nottingham most notably known for being one of the pioneering artists of the nu-folk revivalists who bridged folk music into the 21st Century, introducing it to a larger mainstream audience.

Ruth first rocketed onto the wider music scene in 2007, at 18 years old, with her debut album ‘Threads’.
Ruth’s unique voice coupled with her (then) novel and vibrant interpretation of folk songs garnered her almost overnight national critical acclaim, seldom seen by a small independent release (The Guardian awarded the record with 4-stars and The Independent named it ‘album of the week’). ‘Threads’ also gained Ruth support from luminaries such as BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris, Kate Rusby and Mike Harding to name a few.

Ruth further cemented her musical stature and identity with extensive touring and the release of her second album, ‘The Life of Lilly’ (2009), which enjoyed similar accolades to her debut. Her single ‘Si Tu Dois Partir’ (released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Fairport Convention’s chart topping success with the same song) was named ‘Single of the Week’ by The Guardian and her stunning arrangement of ‘The Hedger and Ditcher’ was adopted by the BBC series ‘Larkrise to Candleford’ and inspired the series fanale.

In 2015, Ruth was invited to join the impressive collaborative artist roster of the ‘Evamore’ project where her awesome studio contributions and stunning vocal arrangements attracted the late Sinead O’Connor. The song ‘One More Yard’ was released in 2019 and featured Ronnie Wood, Nick Mason and Imelda May.

Ruth returned to performing live in 2019 when she released an album titled ‘Changeable Heart’ with BBC Radio 2 Folk Award-winning artist Sam Kelly in 2019 with Kate Rusby’s label, Pure Records.

Ruth’s reintroduction to performing was, however, cut short due to the global pandemic.

Now, 16 years after the release of her 2nd album, Ruth has surrounded herself with a band of exceptional musicians who are preparing to record, what surely must be, the most eagerly awaited album in British folk music.
