Jo Davie
Jo Davie 'Nothing Comes Free' EP Launch w/ Cigány Weaver (Northern NSW)
The Citadel
21 Queen St

About this concert
Join singer-songwriter Jo Davie and raucous jazz-folk ensemble Cigány Weaver for a very special co-headline show at The Citadel, Murwillumbah on Friday May 16th!
Jo Davie will perform first, with intricate songs from her solo project's debut EP 'Nothing Comes Free'. Joined on stage by her band, Jo will perform with guitar, drums, bass, and exquisite three-part harmonies, bringing audiences into her delicately curated world. The EP itself exemplifies this experience - recorded by Sam Cromack (Ball Park Music), each track features Jo’s vulnerable yet powerful vocals, technical skill and poignant lyricism. Jo has won audiences and accolades across Australia and has recently taken her career to new heights, winning the 2024 Carol Lloyd Award and supporting ARIA-winning artist Katie Noonan to sold-out audiences at QPAC Concert Hall, Sydney Festival, Bleach Festival and Darwin Festival.
Then to bring home the night, Jo will again take the stage, but this time with the virtuosic ensemble, Cigány Weaver. Fusing the passion of folk music, the precision of classical, and the spontaneity of jazz, Cigány Weaver create a rich and vibrant atmosphere for both the heart and mind. Front woman, Jo Davie's soaring vocals and enchanting gentle demeanour combine with the fiery violin, dynamic guitars and driving rhythm section to create a purely acoustic group that effortlessly navigates the musical nexus between intimacy and raucousness. It's easy to see why the group have been nominated for two National Live Music Awards, and have packed out stages across Australia at Woodford Folk Festival, The National Folk Festival, Caloundra Music Festival, Illawarra Folk Festival and many more. They can't wait to return to The Citadel after their last show in 2021!

Jo Davie Biography
Graced with jazz sensibilities, exceptional vocal technique and a four-octave range, vocalist Jo Davie offers up genuine story-telling. Bursting onto the Australian scene as runner-up to the 2018 Folk Alliance Young Artist of the Year, she is winning audiences and accolades across Australia, with her unique style and vibrant stage presence. Recently, Jo supported ARIA award-winning artist Katie Noonan at Brisbane’s QPAC Concert Hall, Sydney Festival, Bleach Festival and Darwin Festival, alongside a run of Victorian shows. Whether performing her own songs, soaring above her raucous band 'Cigány Weaver', or playing in Asha Jefferies’ band, Jo sings with heartfelt simplicity, technical skill and impressive versatility. Having showcased at festivals including Woodford Folk Festival (QLD), The National Folk Festival (ACT), Bello Winter Music Festival (NSW), Cullulleraine Music Festival (VIC), and Tablelands Folk Festival (FNQ), her career has already taken her across Australia. Above all, Jo’s primary focus is to share stories, hoping to put a little bit of herself into every song she performs.
Anika Luna (Triple J): "Heartfelt and to the bone - what a strong debut from this Meanjin act on the rise."
Helen Pitt (Sydney Morning Herald): "Two names stand out for me from the entire 24-day Sydney Festival program: Christie Whelan Brown and Jo Davie. Remember them. I won't forget their performances. Jo Davie was the support act for Katie Noonan: Joni Mitchell's Blue 50th Anniversary...Davie took to the stage in a '70s-style chiffon style dress that could have come from the Canadian crooner's wardrobe, and her husky, sweet, high, bell-like voice could easily be mistaken for Mitchell's, who made leaping up to her head voice an art. She was an exquisite entree to the main act of Noonan."
Ash McGregor (Triple J, live on Home & Hosed): "It's a stunning song, it's about being left in relationship limbo, like love me, or leave me. And her tone is beautiful, she's influenced by artists like Julia Jacklin and Phoebe Bridgers and I can just hear her singing their singles, she's someone that I've been watching for quite a while since I used to live in Meanjin/Brisbane and she's always been creating, collaborating, working in music in it's purest form, playing gigs at Woodford Folk Festival. It's something that I've always admired from her, she's got so much craft behind her so I'm very excited that she's finally got a debut single out in the world...She's someone you've gotta be keeping an eye on, and if you want to hear her four octave range live, she's playing a show in Brisbane on the 21st of this month."
