FOXY ROXX Biography
Foxy Roxx, San Diego’s first official glam band, was the brainchild of Tony Starlin & T.J. Jovan in 1987. At the time, Tony was handling duties behind the drum kit, while T.J. performed as the band’s first lead guitarist. Rounding out the lineup was Lance on vocals, and James on bass. The first lineup unfortunately didn’t last very long and James was replaced by Mark Jasmine on bass. This lineup lasted for quite a while until things began to go array. Tony and Lance discovered they were extremely similar and had some conflicts over the creative ideas and the “way forward” for Foxy Roxx, and it was decided that Lance & Mark would leave the band.
This motivation allowed Tony & T.J. to set out in search of a new singer & bass.
Lance Larouge and Tony remain friends to this day. Lance went on to become a famed artist, working and creating covers for DC Comics as well as many other artistic projects.
In earlier days, bands did not have the luxury of Craigslist/FB/Online options to search for like-minded musicians. Tony and TJ had to use the old-fashioned outlets to find fellow glam rockers, including newspapers, fanzines, and rock magazines.
One morning, Tony discovered an ad in BAM Magazine a couple up and coming glam studs by the names of Dennis Sinned & Trash. Both Dennis and Trash were based in Anaheim, and as luck would have it, were looking for a drummer & guitar player to start a band. Tony made the connection & the Foxy Roxx glam movement had begun.
Tony and TJ began the 1 ½ hour trek to Anaheim 4 days a week, solidifying the foundation of early Foxy Roxx.
Many shows were to follow, including a few shows in Mexico City, in which Foxy Roxx would entertain the likes of 2500 screaming fans. The adulation was amazing, so amazing that Trash had soon decided that the Mexico was the place for him to live and start a family. Unfortunately, with the language barrier for the band, it was decided to part ways with Trash as he began his life south of the border. Once again, the search for a new guitar player was underway, as the band didn’t want to lose any momentum.
Next, in stepped Rochelle, an amazingly talented musician with the look, swagger & moves of a modern day rockstar. Foxy Roxx was once again on their way to the stardom, but nobody could see what issues would lie ahead. Dennis had begun to experience an illness which would change the band forever. Dennis was diagnosed with leukemia. Dennis (Sinned) Fredenberg was only 19 years old and although he battled bravely, Dennis succumbed to the disease in 1995. RIP Dennis.
Prior to his passing, Dennis made Tony promise to keep this band together no matter what. An extremely tall order with the glam scene switching over to grunge and punk rock. Reluctantly, and not confident at the time, Tony accepted Dennis’s wishes, put down his drum sticks, and was now the new lead singer of Foxy Roxx. The search for a drummer was now underway. Tony was going to keep the band, and Dennis’s wishes alive, no matter what.
As the search began, Tony remembered this kid he used to know in high school. This kid beat the drums like nobodies’ business. Hard, precise, on time, and the look of a rock god. That person’s name was Robby Tripp. Tony & Robby were always in competing rock bands during their high school days, with one always trying to out due or out “rock” the other. If one band had fire, the next would have an inferno. If one band had lights, the other would have the sun. But one thing never wavered, there friendship as well as the goal to be the loudest, most outrageous band in the San Diego/LA/Hollywood area.
As fate would have it, Tony and Robby would meet up at a Kiss signing and as both caught up with life after high school, they realized that both of them were in the same situation. Robby had just left his band Britton due to creative differences, and Foxy Roxx was in dire need of a drummer who possessed what Robby had. An over-the-top rock presence that the world has not seen yet. Tony asked Robby to join Foxy Roxx, and Robby happily accepted.
The year was ’94-’95, and at this time, current guitarist Rochelle was having serious issues outside of the band & was unfortunately asked to leave. As with many bands, the search for another guitarist was underway.
In stepped Jerry Vayne, an extremely talented musician who was immersed in the San Diego rock scene. Jerry’s brand of metal was a bit different than Foxy Roxx, as Jerry arrived sporting a goatee and the “Doc Marten” look. The type of heavy metal music/look that your parents warned you about.
Tony asked Jerry if he wanted the position as temp gig, play a few shows & help the rest of the band finish up there first CD, which was 1995’s epic release, “Shake the Foundation”, which received commercial and critical acclaim.
The chemistry was right between Jerry and the rest of the band. Once the goatee was shaved, the Doc's discarded & the makeup applied, the induction/transformation of Jerry Vayne, lead guitarist of Foxy Roxx, was complete. But as will all bands, there was more dissention.
Soon after the first cd, "Shake the Foundation" was complete, T.J. had decided to also leave the band. It only seems right as the only member who has not been replaced was the bassist. The search began again.
As the band combed Southern California looking for the right fit, Tony had placed an ad in the San Diego Reader stating “Looking for A Bassist into Kiss, Motley Crue and Poison. The gods answered, and in walks Bobby Soxx, the long green haired star that the band yearned for. Bobby’s style and attitude fit the band extremely well, and the lineup was now solidified for the future. All were on board, and with no more lineup changes, the band began their quest to be the Ultimate Rock N' Roll Machine, a Good Time Party Rock N' Roll Band For The Ages, as shown on the 1997 release, Mixed Up World.
Foxy Roxx spent the better part of late 1990’s supporting acts to include Dokken, Great White, Tuff, The Zero's, Enuff Z'Nuff, Slaughter, Ace Frehley, Peter Criss, Kiss, Warrant, LA Guns, Pretty Boy Floyd, Bang Tango, Sebastian Bach (Skid Row), Impotent Sea Snakes, Kiss Tribute Band Black Diamond, The Mistakes, The Phil Lewis Band, and C.C. Deville’s Samantha 7 to name just a few.
Western tours would follow, playing up and down the pacific coast, with Hollywood becoming home base.
Foxy Roxx was chosen as "Breakout Pick of The Year" for the San Diego Music Awards, 1996 & nominated for "Best Glam Band" in the annual Rock City News Awards for 1997 & 1998.
With musical tastes changing, globally as well as in the band, coupled with internal and external issues with some members, the band decided to call is a day in 2001, last opening for Tuff at Paladino’s in Reseda, CA.
Fast forward to 2022. All members have gone their separate ways, but have remained as close as any family. And most importantly, the band has resurrected that itch that can only be scratched by one thing, glam punk rock and roll.
Unfortunately, due to different musical tastes, Jerry Vayne will not be part of the reunion and as always, the band moved on.
Tony had remembered his old friend who met him in 1999 at the Brick by Brick bathroom in San Diego. This dude had purchased the Pink and the Black compilation (Perris Records) while stationed in Guam with the US Navy, a compilation that included the Foxy Roxx smash single, Hangin’ Out.
In steps Davey Steele. Davey was born on glam punk, citing influences as Faster Pussycat, the Sea Hags, the Hangmen, and Cats and Boots. He has always been on the sleazy side of glam scene, which the band has welcomed with open arms. Davey’s credits include playing bass in the San Diego Nu-Metal band, Dr. Chunk, as well as rhythm guitar for Junkies and Thieves, a roots rock outfit that received critical acclaim for best rock EP, “If It Ain’t Rainin’” for the 2005 LA Music Awards. Davey has left Southern California for the Pacific Northwest, but flies in whenever the band needs him. He is truly dedicated and is in this for the long haul, as being in Foxy Roxx is a dream come true.
As Kiss has done, Foxy Roxx plans to give fans new and old an amazing old school over the top glam punk rock and roll show that we all remember from the 80’s. It’s what fans deserve.
Foxy Roxx wants all fans, new and old, to remember how great things were back in the day, as we plan to always provide a rock and roll debauchery show for the ages. Foxy Roxx is ready. Are you?
