The Groovy Cellar Biography

In 1991, mastermind Olaf Schumacher formed THE GROOVY CELLAR. Named after a neo-sixties club in London in the early 80s, this more than hints at the musical direction they are heading in. In addition to three albums, the group has released a series of singles and EPs for Twang!, Marsh-Marigold and Firestation Records, as well as several compilation contributions worldwide. THE GROOVY CELLAR have shared the stage live with artists as diverse as Cleaners From Venus, Ian Brown (Stone Roses), Television Personalities, The Movement, Stone Foundation, Graham Day & The Gaolers, Liga der Gewöhnlichen Gentlemen, and Fehlfarben.

In 2023, they successfully played their first concerts in the UK together with their mates from The New Fools. Their song "Mac Arthurs Lane" was subject of the Ramstein Doku Centre's ‘Ram(m)stein, Ramones & Lois Lane’ exhibition about the influence of US troops on the lives and culture of the German population.
In 2024 their latest released "A Certain Girl" was part of the vinyl split-single with The New Fools` "We Love The Sun".
Clearly influenced by the classic songwriting of the sixties, THE GROOVY CELLAR are simply pop, or - let's say - indie-mod-pop would be more accurate.

Press quotes:

Rolling Stone (3,5 / 5)
"Berlin's most reliable beatband...The music moves in style between tight beat and airier sounds, between power chords and harpsichord.“

twang-tone.de (Album of the month, 4,5 / 5)
"finely tuned pop pearls“
"Wonderful melodies, jangling guitars but also fine organ and harpsichord sounds“

33rpmPVC.de
"Finest Indie-Mod-Pop ..., which uses Twee-Pop and Modrevival from the 80s as well as Beat or Northern Soul from the 60s. But as already said, the variety of outstanding songs is the big plus of the LP.
Great band - great record"
