ARTIST INFO “Fleck is surely the finest banjo player on the planet” – Guardian Just in case you aren’t familiar with Béla Fleck there are many who say he’s the premiere banjo player in the world. Others claim that Fleck has virtually reinvented the image and the sound of the banjo. His remarkable career has taken him all over the musical map in a wide range of solo projects and collaborations. An eighteen-time Grammy winner, Fleck has the virtuosic, jazz-to-classical ingenuity of an iconic instrumentalist and composer with bluegrass roots. Also, he writes concertos for full symphony orchestra, exploring the banjo’s African roots. Then, he collaborates with Indian musical royalty Zakir Hussain and Rakesh Churasia with Edgar Meyer. Edmar Castañeda was nominated for a Latin Grammy in the category “Best Latin Jazz Album” with his album Family. Castañeda’s performance can be heard in Disney’s 2021 film, Encanto, which features original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Castañeda acts on the soundtrack and serves as a music consultant on Encanto. Colombian-born Castañeda has become the preeminent jazz harp virtuoso since his 1994 arrival in the U.S. Here, he beautifully merges the jazz tradition with a diverse set of styles and genres. Castañeda has appeared with Wynton Marsalis, Béla Fleck, John Scofield, Rickie Lee Jones, Hiromi, and Paco de Lucia. Born in Mexico City, four-time Grammy winner Antonio Sanchez began playing the drums at age five. Then, he performed professionally in his early teens in Mexico’s rock, jazz and Latin scenes. Sanchez has become one of the most sought-after drummers on the international jazz scene. He is one of Pat Metheny’s most notable collaborators, over eighteen years and nine albums. He also has recorded and performed with Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden and Toots Thielemans.

Antonio Sanchez Biography

Four time Grammy Award winner and Golden Globe nominee Antonio Sanchez is considered by many critics and musicians alike as one of the most prominent drummers, bandleaders and composers of his generation. Born in Mexico City on November 1st, 1971, he started playing drums at the age of 5 and began performing professionally early in his teens. Antonio pursued a degree in classical piano at the National Conservatory in Mexico City and in 1993 he moved to Boston to enroll at Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in Jazz Studies in 1997. Sanchez’s was always very active in the New England music local scene but since his move to New York City in 1999 Antonio has become one of the most sought after drummers in the international jazz scene. His playing is featured in over a hundred albums and has performed and recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz including Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, Gary Burton and Toots Thielmans. He has been the drummer of choice for 20 time Grammy winner Pat Metheny and has been part of virtually every project the famed guitarist has put together since 2000. They’ve recorded 8 albums together and 3 of them have been awarded the Grammy. He regularly collaborates with some of the today’s most prominent jazz musicians such as Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, John Patitucci, Danilo Perez, David Sanchez, Paquito D'Rivera, Kenny Werner, Marcus Roberts, Avishai Cohen, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves, Miguel Zenon, Scott Colley, Dave Samuels, Luciana Souza, Billy Childs, and Claudia Acuña just to name a few. Antonio’s continuous search as an artist has pushed him to compose and lead his own bands and ensembles. He has released 3 critically acclaimed albums under his name. His first one, “Migration” was called “one of the best new releases of 2007” by All About Jazz and features a star studded cast which includes Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Chris Potter, David Sanchez and Scott Colley. His second solo effort “Live in New York” was recored during a 4 day run at the prestigious Jazz Standard in New York City and features saxophone greats David Sanchez and Miguel Zenon as well as bassist Scott Colley. Antonio’s 2013 album “New Life” was made entirely of his own compositions and was widely received by critics all over the world. It was the winner of the prestigious German Echo Jazz Award in 2014. Downbeat Magazine said: “New Life is that rare combination of great composing, great players and great musicianship”. It features Donny McCaslin and Dave Binney on saxophones, John Escreet on Piano, Matt Brewer on bass and special guest Thana Alexa on vocals. 2015 will see the release of two very distinct projects that are important milestones in Sanchez’s solo career: “Three Times Three”, a double album which features three stellar trios: Brad Mehldau and Matt Brewer, John Scofield and Christian McBride and last but not least Joe Lovano and John Patitucci. This record includes six original compositions carefully penned by Antonio for each trio as well as three arranged well known standards by Wayne Shorter, Miles David and Thelonious Monk. The second 2015 release will be “The Meridian Suite” performed by Migration, his flagship band since 2011 which features Seamus Blake on saxophone, John Escreet on piano, Matt Brewer on bass with special guests Thana Alexa on vocals and Adam Rogers on guitar. This album is Sanchez’s most ambitious compositional project to date which features a long form 60 minute uninterrupted piece of music. He explores the concept of Meridians: imaginary lines that divide our planet, our universe, our bodies and that allow us to accurately calculate time. Each section of the Suite is relevant in some way or another to these complex subjects and musically attempts to portray his vision of how these imaginary lines flow through us, guide us and influence us in the most subtle and profound ways. His writing is also featured on two of Gary Burton’s latest releases. “Common Ground” and “Guided Tour” include four of Antonio’s original compositions and the earlier album was named after his tune of the same name. In January 2013 Antonio was invited by acclaimed filmmaker Alejandro Gonzales Iñarritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel, Biutiful) to create the original film score for “Birdman” (Fox Searchlight) featuring Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts and Emma Thompson. This is a very unique project that features Sanchez’s drumming as the main musical ingredient in Iñarritu’s film. The film has gotten an astonishing number of awards and nominations across the board for Iñarritu, the whole cast and Sanchez’s score. Antonio’s original music for “Birdman” has received the following awards so far in 2014: -Critics Choice Movie Awards -Hollywood Music in Media Award -The Satellite Award -Soundtrack Stars award at the Venice Film Festival -Las Vegas Film Critic’s Society Award -Austin Film Critic’s Association -The Phoenix Film Critics Society Award -The Satellite Awards Nominations: -Golden Globes -British Bafta Awards -Critics Choice Movie Awards -Chicago Film Critics Association -San Diego Film Critics Society -Washington Film Critics Association He's currently composing and performing the music in for the MGM/Epix TV series Get Shorty.
