April Wine Biography
It all began in Nova Scotia late in 1969. The Henman brothers, David and Ritchie, got together with their cousin Jim Henman and fellow musician Myles Goodwyn to form a band called April Wine. Fifteen studio albums, three live releases, numerous compilations, a boxed set and thousands of concerts later April Wine has become enormously popular in Canada, the United States and throughout the world.
Their greatest response internationally throughout the 1970s and early '80s came with songs such as "You Could Have Been a Lady" (1972), "Tonite Is a Wonderful Time to Fall in Love" (1975), "Roller" (1979), "I Like to Rock" (1980), "Sign of the Gypsy Queen" (1981), and "Just Between You and Me" (1981). April Wine has released 16 studio albums.
In March of 2009, April Wine was inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame during Canadian Music Week in Toronto and also received The Lifetime Achievement Award for being part of Canadian Music History for 40 years.
On April 18th of 2010, at the Juno Awards, April Wine was inducted in to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
In December 2022 Myles Goodwyn announced that he would no longer be touring with the band, turning over his vocal and guitar duties to Marc Parent. On 2 March 2023 he performed his last official “live” show with April Wine in Truro, Nova Scotia, close to where it all started. Despite a massive snowstorm, fans filled the arena to enjoy the band’s performance. He announced that he might drop in and perform with the band, from time to time, if they are in his area, but his days of touring coast to coast are over.
“I’ve had a long career, happy, fulfilling. I’ve seen much of the world and I’m grateful for the continuing support of radio and our fans worldwide, but touring has been very difficult in recent years because of my diabetes and my health comes first, so unfortunately, my touring days are officially over”, he said. He only focused on writing and recording. Sadly, Myles passed away in Halifax, Nova Scotia on December 3, 2023, at the age of 75.
April Wine members today are Brian Greenway, Richard Lanthier, Roy Nichol and Marc Parent. Despite being referred to as a “new lineup,” it’s worth noting that the actual members of April Wine have been with the band for quite some time: Brian Greenway has been part of the group since 1977, while Richard Lanthier and Roy Nichol have been with the band respectively since 2011 and 2012. Although Marc Parent is the newest addition, he is not new to the music industry and brings much experience to the band.
With a group of experienced rockers like this, April Wine is in a strong position to continue their legacy as one of Canada’s most iconic rock bands. Fans are eagerly anticipating every performances!
