About this concert
Ex Band of Friends singer/guitarist Gwyn Ashton is smashing stages around the world as a nu age “one-man power trio”, promoting his 10th album, Mojosoul. Ashton is on the top of the list of the new wave of modern blues rock artists, spearheaded by The Black Keys, Jack White, Seasick Steve etc. Live, his dynamic performances also include haunting and mesmerising bottleneck and lap steel moments. Laying down a dirty backbeat on a foot drum kit, bass lines with his thumb, he attacks his guitar with a bottleneck slide, sings and blows blues harp into a lofi radio microphone, creating the illusion of a full band. From a scream to a whisper in a split second, his dynamic sensitivity on all these instruments defines his musicality and flexibility. With a new single Get Outta Town feat Guns N’ Roses guitarist Richard Fortus and members of Australian bands Cold Chisel and Superjesus, the Welsh-Australian recently appeared across Europe with prog rockers Wishbone Ash, co-headlined the Adelaide Guitar Festival in Australia and blazed his way across the UK, Germany, Balkans, Czechia, Slovakia and Poland. He‘s played dozens of festivals across Europe, UK, Mexico, Brazil, Australia and Russia and tours with some of the biggest names in rock and blues. Inspired by the likes of Hendrix, Ry Cooder and David Lindley, his “guitarsenal” includes a rack of electric and acoustic instruments including lap slide, resonator, 12-string and old pawn shop guitars. He plays venues, festivals, guitar shows and conducts masterclasses worldwide. Ashton has multiple Tracks of The Week in the UK’s Classic Rock Magazine with guests Don Airey (Deep Purple), Neil Murray (Whitesnake), Robbie Blunt (Robert Plant) and Rory Gallagher’s band. Formerly with Virgin Records, France, Gwyn Ashton was lead guitarist in Europe with Band of Friends (Rory Gallagher’s band) and in Australia with Stevie Wright (Easybeats) and Jim Keays (Master’s Apprentices). He has opened shows for BB King, Buddy Guy, Ray Charles, Peter Green, Van Morrison, Hubert Sumlin (Howlin’ Wolf), Mick Taylor, Status Quo, The Yardbirds, Slade, Robin Trower, Steve Hackett, Wishbone Ash, The Troggs and more. He has been invited onstage to jam with Mick Fleetwood, Canned Heat, Walter Trout, Elliot Randall (Steely Dan) and many others.

I don't usually listen to the music Mr. Gwyn Ashton creates. Nevertheless I was delighted how energetic the show was, the rande of sounds of his guitars and musical skills. His violin player/partner Jitka is a deep personality not only as a musician. It's so refreshing to talk to such a bright personality who really listen to you, who can sincerely share her thoughts. It was a great show and I'm going to see them again in the future.

Gwyn Ashton Biography

Toting a hot new album and smashing stages worldwide, Aussie axeman Gwyn Ashton has reinvented himself as a one-man progressive alt. blues band and is now on his current Solo Elektro tour.

In two hours Ashton takes us on an eclectic mesmerising musical journey from acoustic roots, blues and world music to a set of electric hard-edged rockin’ blues, 60s-style fuzz garage rock and Brit-voiced psychedelia on an array of instruments, including a 1930s National steel guitar, Weissenborn lap slide and his custom-made Italian Liutart signature model guitar.
With no backing tracks or setlist Ashton spontaneously draws his set mostly from eight released studio albums. His lyrical songwriting and musical dexterity on resonator and lap slide guitars mixed with frenetic electric slide, heavy bass lines, hardcore kick drum beats and lo-fi microphone vocals makes him one of the most unique contemporary artists on the scene today.

He’s been ranked at number 3 in Guitar Part magazine’s Guitarist of The Year after Jeff Beck and Gary Moore and praised by the likes of Robert Plant, Johnny Winter and Deep Purple’s Don Airey, who has played on two of Ashton’s albums. Hubert Sumlin, Canned Heat, Walter Trout and Mick Fleetwood have all invited him to play with them onstage.
He’s opened for BB King, Status Quo, Mick Taylor, Buddy Guy, Rory Gallagher, Ray Charles, Junior Wells and many others and appears at festivals and clubs in the UK, Brazil, Malta, Australia and all over Europe.

Ashton has recorded with: Kim Wilson, Robbie Blunt, Chris Glen, Ted McKenna, Don Airey (Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Rainbow) and Gerry McAvoy & Brendan O’Neill (Rory Gallagher). Ashton replaced Thin Lizzy/Motörhead guitarist Brian Robertson fronting Band of Friends - a celebration of the music of Rory Gallagher, featuring his former band members Gerry, Brendan, Lou Martin and Mark Feltham. He has also opened for Peter Green, Johnny Winter, Robin Trower, Jeff Healey, The Yardbirds, Magnum, Ten Years After, Dr Feelgood and many others.
