About this concert

Joël started with singing before he can remember. At school and on sundays on special occasions, he would sing in front of the community in the church. Later on Joël enjoyed guitar- and pianolessons which helped him to develop musically.

In the year 2008, Joël moved to Rotterdam, a big city with a lot of opportunities. Because of his love for music he visited the conservatory Codarts a lot to get lessons in theory and music. Thus Joël applied for the Bachelor of Music in Education and got accepted. Not shortly after he started this education, his singing-teacher informed him about the concept countertenor, because he was singing in his falsetto so often. The first thing Joël found, when he searched the internet, was the Erbarme Dich from J. S. Bach, sang by Andreas Scholl and Michael Chance. Joël immediately fell in love with the music and said: "This is what I want to do." After this being said, he applied for the Bachelor of Music as a countertenor and started his singing lessons with Carolyn Watkinson and is now studying with Charlotte Riedijk.

His repertoire varies from Sweeter than Roses and Music for a While from Henry Purcell to songs of Charles Ives and even Mahler's "second" in the choir. Joël frequently participates in composer projectweeks, in which the composer students from Codarts write new songs for the Classical singers to perform. Since of 2010 Joël sings with the Rotterdam young male choir, De Coolsingers. There he sings music from the middle ages to the 1960's.

Joël often visited the Royal Conservatory in The Hague to take lessons at the Early music department. Most recently Joël enjoyed masterclasses given by Michael Chance, Lynne Dawson and Paul Beier, worldwide known musicians.

In 2014 Joël made his debute in the Opera Amadigi di Gaula by Händel as Amadigi, in Rotterdam. Shortly after that, in March 2015 he made his debute in the concert hall de Doelen with a solo recital.
On the 29th of June in 2016, Joël sang his final exam in that same hall, this time accompanied by the early music orchestra Os Orphicum. Joël recieved a Cum Laude honour for his bachelor exam.

In October 2016 Joël started a Master in Singing in Hamburg with the teacher Jörn Dopfer to further develop his voice as a countertenor. He graduated top of his class in 2018 and was granted a place in the Konzertexamen program, which he succesfully finished in 2019
