Joe Bonamassa Premiere Theater At Foxwoods Casino, Ledyard, Conn. March 1st, 2025 Did Bonamassa’s recent performance at the Grammy’s take the chip off his shoulder? Not a chance. But he’s still the king of the blues guitarists, with a commanding tone reminiscent of Free’s Paul Kossoff. His sublime taste in covers included Guitar Slim’s Well I Done Got Over It and soared on Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland’s 24 Hour Blues. He removed his trademark shades briefly before strapping on a Telecaster and tearing through Led Zep’s How Many More Times. His take on Freddie King’s Pack It Up had as much power as the Texas Cannonball himself. The Heart That Never Waits made worthy use of backup vocalists Jade McCray and Danielle DeAndrea. Some of JB’s grouchiness surfaced when the entire crowd of 3,600 didn’t immediately stand for keyboardist Reese Wynans’s intro. “What do ya all have gout? C’mon!” That did the trick. Encore, Mountain Time, from 2002’s breakthrough, So, It’s Like That, glided from heavy riffage to quiet passages that hushed the audience. The dinging slot machines didn’t come close to drowning out a show with no filler. Christopher Walsh
