About this concert
From Manhattan to Mars: Germany’s brightest young orchestra joins the conductor, pianist and all-round phenomenon Wayne Marshall in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Holst’s The Planets.
Everyone has their favourite bit of The Planets, whether it’s the warlike rhythms of Mars, the blissful calm of Venus, or the majesty of Jupiter. But Holst’s masterpiece is a lot more than just magnificent melodies – it’s a voyage to the outer limits of the human spirit.
Tonight, Wayne Marshall takes this superb young German orchestra to infinity and beyond, in a musical odyssey that opens with the raw imagination of Britten’s ever-popular Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, before Marshall plays Gershwin’s showstopping Rhapsody in Blue the way Gershwin did – directing from the piano.
In other words, it’s an evening of towering tunes and sheer inspiration, even before we set off for the stars…
‘Marshall conducted and played with amazing versatility and strength… outstanding’ (MDTheatreGuide.com)
