About this concert
Saturday 1 June 2024 Peggy Lee, Billie Holiday, Betty Carter, and Abbey Lincoln weren’t just great jazz vocalists – they were also songwriters, who contributed some key works to the canon. In Women’s Words, Sisters Stories, vocalist Ineza and the Alex Webb Trio explore the repertoire penned by the great female songstresses – Billie’s Tell Me More, Peggy’s It’s a Good Day, Abbey’s Throw it Away, Betty Carter's Tight and many more, including poet Fran Landesman’s classic lyric Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most. And bringing it up to date are songs by Jazzmeia Horn, Cecile McLorin Salvant and Rachelle Ferrell. Ineza is a dazzling Rwandan-born Belgian jazz singer, based in London. She is a graduate of both Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, and Maastricht Conservatoire in The Netherlands. She is also a passionate educator, and next to her work as a singing teacher she has been involved in various workshop-leading projects. She also has a passion for performing repertoire composed by the great female stars of jazz. Alex Webb is a pianist, arranger, and songwriter with a long history of working with leading jazz vocalists; his songs have been recorded by Liane Carroll, China Moses, Jo Harrop, Allan Harris, Cherise, Ayanna Witter-Johnson, and many others. Charlie Pyne graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2009 and has just released a new album under her own name, ‘Nature Is a Mother’. Her virtuoso bass playing, both electric and acoustic, has been heard with many top UK jazz names. Award-winning drummer Katie Patterson is from Novia Scotia, Canada, where she played in the National Concert Band of Canada before coming to the UK to study at Leeds College of Music. Involved in many projects, she also leads a big band tribute to Steely Dan. Line up: Ineza - vocals Alex Webb - piano Charlie Pyne - bass Adam Teixeira - drums
