About this concert
It starts dramatically, ends dramatically, and in the twelve minutes in between it is also tremendously exciting: »This Midnight Hour« by the British composer Anna Clyne is a suggestive, archaic, captivating piece that releases a lot of emotions and images. Premiered in 2015, it quickly became a crowd pleaser. Béla Bartók's First Piano Concerto is also captivating, tracing the elemental forces of rhythm and noise. Here, the piano becomes a rhythm instrument and, together with the orchestra, unfolds an energetic momentum with an almost electrifying effect. Claude Debussy describes the primordial forces of nature and human existence in his "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune", a key work of musical impressionism and Debussy's compositional breakthrough. In his early suite, on the other hand, the master of colours and moods is still almost classical. Here the composer still revels in the spirit of classicism and the Belle Epoque: with wit, charm and esprit. Programme: Anna Clyne: "This Midnight Hour" Béla Bartók: Piano Concerto No. 1 SZ 83, BB 91 Claude Debussy: "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune" and Suite for Orchestra No. 1
