The Early Swerve Biography
The Early Swerve release their debut single We Take Our Time on the 1st February 2024 on all streaming platforms. The single is taken from their forthcoming album More People Than Teeth which is to be released later in the year.
We take our time to look at these things…
A song that knows the drinking don’t stop the thinking and admits that the betting only yields brief forgetting.
It’s Friday night pub carnage, 4am snooker club gurning.
Fighting in the streets, crying into kebabs, the blue flash car crash.
Introducing The Early Swerve…
The Early Swerve is the creative partnership of best mates Dave Mackinnon (music) and Essex Moorcroft (lyrics).
They describe their sound as Gangster Folk/Nu Skiffle. The lyrics are darkly comic contemporary narratives, taking inspiration from shady local characters and barstool fables.
When they first started, the band had a revolving door of local session musicians, before settling on their current live lineup.
“We were like Steely Dan. If you lived local and were any good, you did time in the Swerve”
As a live act, they combine blistering vocal harmonies with a ragged skiffle aesthetic.

Jay Toomey - Backing vocals, Acoustic Bass
