Maja Savic Biography
MAJA SAVIC is a bluesy and soulful jazz vocalist with a mature and smooth sound, and over 15 years of experience performing on small stages as well as major events and TV performances, in duo formations up to big bands! She actively promotes jazz everywhere she goes; she runs her Association for promoting jazz art and culture – JAZZart and works actively as a vocal coach, organizing numerous vocal workshops both in Croatia and in Paris, where she is currently based.
She started composing in the early days when she began playing the piano at the age of 7. She trains and performs for 6 years in a theater group “Tirena” in Zagreb, which helped her with shyness and general stage presence. This turned out to be a valuable experience for performing jazz later on, which she regularly uses in her teaching method. In her college years, she begins performing as a singer, from pop bands to jazz, which she discovered at the Sarajevo Jazz Festival in 2004. That’s when she attended her first jazz workshop with her mentor Romy Camerun from Germany and discovered a new purpose.
“The first time I sang jazz, it was like hearing my true voice for the first time! I knew at that very moment that this was my calling. To sing JAZZ.”
Soon after she moved to Portugal where she studied with many jazz masters from Portugal, Spain, and the US. Her mentor and collaborator was a distinguished bass player Ze Eduardo, with whom she also recorded a pop-jazz project. Apart from Jazz, she also studies Indian and Brazilian Music, Avantgarde and Improvised Music.
Up to date, she collaborated with various musicians from Croatia, from jazz professionals to a collaboration with funk group Bastardz, Less Than a Minute, DJs Ludvig & Stelar who invited her to sing and publish for Cafe del Mar in 2009, etc. She recorded two compositions written by her colleague Tihomir Hojsak, a double bass player, for his debut album – Jazz Room. She writes all her lyrics, vocals, and back vocals. Her talent was recognized and she got nominated for the Status Award in 2008 in the category of New Jazz Artist. Co-operates with many musicians from Portugal, Spain, France, Slovenia, Brazil, Columbia, the UK, the USA, and Croatia.
Currently based in Paris, France where she is pursuing her international career.
