About this concert
When I first conceived of Morning Bear as a new direction for my music in 2014, I was touring through Europe with just a guitar and a backpack. I ended up in Copenhagen for only one day, and after playing on the streets for change, I found myself at the top of a hill in the botanic gardens. It was during this trip, on this hill that I wrote the song "Traveling." There just so happened to be a class of small children on a field trip that day, and to my surprise they came over and sat politely and silently around me while I played guitar and worked on the song! After listening for a while, one of the little girls came up to me and gave me a heart-shaped eraser which I have carried in my guitar case ever since that day. This experience was one of my most profound in all my time playing music. 10 years later, fate has had it that I have moved to Copenhagen! For this stream, I will return to the botanic gardens once again, the very spot where I first played in Copenhagen. I will be walking through the gardens while I perform, ending on the top of the hill to play the song I wrote there so many years ago. As part of this livestream, I will be playing a new, unreleased song, and I will be sticking around to do a Q&A after the set as well (so feel free to put questions into the chat)! This is going to be a really special event, and I hope to see you there :)

Morning Bear Biography

The brainchild of Denver-based singer/songwriter John Runnels, Morning Bear is an orchestral indie folk project that channels emotion through vivid imagery and intricate melodies. The songs touch on themes of mental health, of following your dreams, of growing older, and of the doubts of life and love. Characterized by highly dynamic compositions, Morning Bear’s music is a synthesis of the calm and delicate stylings of artists like Bon Iver and Jose Gonzalez with the complexity and depth of the Fleet Foxes and Sufjan Stevens. Featuring soaring vocals and atypical arrangements including cello, violin, piano and more, Morning Bear provides a textured landscape behind pop-influenced hooks.

“...Celeste, is a hauntingly beautiful, orchestral indie folk EP demonstrating tremendous promise from this up-and-coming Denver musician.”
-Alli Andress, AXS.com

Since forming in early 2014, Morning Bear has released two EP's and a single, has toured extensively both nationally and internationally, and has had their music on rotation at college and public radio, including NPR. After a long hiatus, Morning Bear returns with his first new single this September, "The Splitting of the Wood"
-Past live sessions at Open Air CPR, KVOQ-FM (an NPR station), KRFC Fort Collins, CO, KPSU in Portland, OR, and KUCI in Irvine, CA.
