Sananda Maitreya Biography
Sananda Maitreya emerged in 1987 amid a storm of publicity. During the early '80s, he was a soldier for the U.S. Army.
In 1987 he moved to London to sign a record contract with CBS. His first single, "If You Let Me Stay" rocketed into the U.K. Top Ten upon its release. His album, “Introducing the Hardline According ”, was an international success.
In 1988 “Wishing Well” hit number one in the U.S.A. "Sign Your Name" followed it into the Top Five and the album sold 14 million copies worldwide. His mix of soul, rock, pop, and R&B recalled Prince, yet his sensibility was grittier and earthier.
In 1989 “Neither Fish nor Flesh”, was released. The record attacked many self-consciously important themes, including homophobia and environmental destruction. The music added a variety of new textures, from Indian drones to straight-ahead '50s R&B. When “Symphony or Damn” was released in 1993, it received favorable reviews.
In 1996, he released “Vibrator”, a psychedelic album followed by a very successful world tour in America, Japan and Europe.
Since 1995, at the age of 33, he adopted the name Sananda Maitreya, which is also his new artistic name since 2001.
In the new Millennium his new music has been released by the indie label TreeHouse Publishing. His Post Millennium Rock albums are: “WildCard!” (2003), “Angels & Vampires” (2007), “Nigor Mortis” (2009) ,
“The Sphinx” (2011), “Return To Zooathalon” (2013), “The Rise Of The Zugebrian Time Lords” (2015), “Prometheus & Pandora” (2017), “Pandora’s PlayHouse” (2021), and the brand new one set to be released on May 11th: "The Pegasus Project : Pegasus & The Swan" (2024).
