About this concert
- On Liberation Day we celebrate the freedom regained after World War II and the importance of diversity in our society. The concert Freedom in Diversity embodies this celebration through a captivating musical journey that brings together works by three notable composers: Caroline Shaw, Jonathan Dove and Julius Eastman. They each present their own unique contribution to the musical landscape and symbolize diversity in the world of modern music.

Matangi Quartet Biography

The Matangi Quartet was founded in 1999. In 2003 Matangi completed the two-year, full-time course at the Netherlands String Quartet Academy.
The Matangi Quartet has since developed into a regular performer in the Dutch chamber music scene and abroad. With their impassioned playing and smart presentation, Maria-Paula, Daniel, Karsten and Arno epitomize a new generation of classical musicians. The Matangi Quartet has shared the stage with various top-class classical musicians. The quartet has also been invited to perform in various festivals, including the Delft Chamber Music Festival, the Aix-en-Provence Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Carthage Festival in Tunisia, the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, the International Conservatoire Festival in St Petersburg and the North Sea Jazz festival in the Netherlands. In 2002 Matangi was awarded the prestigious Kersjes van de Groenekan Award. In 2008 the quartet won third prize at the International Joseph Joachim Chamber Music Competition. The Matangi Quartet released several CDs which all received great critical acclaim. Together with viola da gamba player Ralph Rousseau the quartet won the Edison Audience Award 2009 for their CD ‘Chansons d’amour’. The CD ‘Testimoni’ with Martin Fondse and Eric Vloeimans was awarded the Edison Jazz prize 2012. In 2023 they were awarded the prestigious Edison Jazz prize again for their album Ruins and Remains together with Joost Lijbaart and Wolfert Brederode.
