Brass Band of Northern Virginia

This British-style brass band, composed of 30 masterful musicians, offers a performance steeped in the sophisticated and symphonic traditions of UK brass ensembles, yet distinctly tailored to echo the cultural narratives of Japan. The concert's repertoire will feature several prominent Japanese composers. Teiichi Okano’s "Furusato," a piece that deeply reflects on the nostalgic essence of the island nation, and a wonderful arrangement of children’s folk songs by Bin Kaneda. We will also be performing Philip Sparke’s iconic "Year of the Dragon," in tribute to the current year’s zodiac, emblematic of the vigor and transformation symbolized by this mythical creature. These pieces, along with others that are carefully selected and arranged by Japanese composers, are designed to bridge the communal spirits of diverse backgrounds through the power of music. Presented in collaboration with the Ekoji Buddhist Temple, this event underscores a commitment to cultural integration and community engagement.
