Lori Yates Biography

Trailblazer Lori Yates is a renowned voice in Canadian roots music and one of the original pioneers of "Alternative Country" in Canada.

The Band's Rick Danko described Yates as having "that desperate Canadian sound," sealing her legendary status.

Lori emerges with her 8th recording, “Matador,” a masterful collection of roots/indie songs that wrap around you like your favourite sweater. " Excellent nine-song recording" - Nick Krewen Toronto Star Feb. 2024

Matador also includes a re-recording of her Guy Clark co-write “Time After Time.”

This recording features the final contribution from the late great David Baxter, a dear friend, esteemed guitarist and bandmate from roots supergroup Hey Stella, making it a touching tribute to his musical legacy.

Matador was recorded at Blue Rodeo's Woodshed Studios and co-produced by Tim Vesely of the Rheostatics.

Yates burst onto Toronto's Queen West scene in the 1980s with her cowpunk band Rang Tango.

After being discovered by Sony Records Nashville, Lori went on to performed and recorded by heavyweights. Colin Linden produced and performed on Breaking Point, Jim Cuddy sang harmony on "Make A Liar Out of Me" and Rick Danko lent his magical vocals to "Rebel Angel". Tom Wilson sang on "You & Me Maria" from the award-winning Book of Minerva record. Lori sang a duet with Greg Allman "Brother to Brother" for the movie Next of Kin starring Patrick Swayze.

Lori caught the tail end of vintage Nashville, met Johnny & June, was mentored by Tammy Wynette, jammed with Jerry Jeff Walker, partied with Harlan Howard, recorded at Cowboy Jack Clement's studio, and even enjoyed jelly beans with Roy Acuff.

Many awards, accolades and nominations followed, including Juno, CCMA, Polaris Prize (Longer List), Lifetime Achievement awards, Songwriter of the Year and a SOCAN #1 Award.

Lori's move from major labels like Sony Nashville and Virgin Music Canada to her independent recordings allowed her to create her best work, proving her unwavering commitment.

Yates's lyrics from "Angels With Bloody Knees" are permanently enshrined in Hamilton's Gore Park, where she lived for 20 years before returning to Toronto in 2023.

Lori was also a popular songwriting mentor who founded "Creative Genius Songwriting" that nurtured emerging songwriters.

Lori's lengthy career and unique style have earned her much respect. Her music is authentic and exudes genuine artistry.
