About this concert
Hyeseon Hong, pronounced as “hay-son · hong,” is a Korean jazz composer and bandleader who has been working in both NYC and Seoul for many years. Hyeseon Hong stands out in the jazz world for her distinct style, marked by memorable melodies, rich harmonies, and the incorporation of Korean rhythmic elements. From the bustling streets of New York City to the vibrant heart of Seoul and back again, her musical exploration has left an enduring impact through her captivating compositions and arrangements. Last year, the Hyeseon Hong Jazz Orchestra embarked on an exciting new project, recording another big band album featuring Hong's evocative compositions. This eagerly awaited release is tentatively scheduled for early spring 2024 and boasts a lineup of exceptionally talented musicians, with Rich Perry on tenor sax as a featured soloist. For the upcoming performance at Birdland on May 5th, the Orchestra will showcase selections from this album alongside premieres of new works by the prolific Hong. The ensemble for this Birdland engagement includes notable names such as John Lake on lead trumpet, Alejandro Aviles and Ben Kono on saxophones, Jeff Davis on drums, vocalist Aubrey Johnson, and other esteemed performers from the bustling NYC scene. Together, they craft a captivating fusion of cultures, inviting audiences on a mesmerizing journey where East and West converge harmoniously within the realm of jazz.
