About this concert
Bringing the backyard Hawaiian style of kani ka pila to the stage at Blue Note, Makana has invited Kawika Kahiapo, Keale, Raiatea, Lopaka Colon, Tavana, Last Jerónimo of Veracruz, Chris Lau and Miss Aloha Hula Kaʻula Kamahele to create a lush waterfall of stringed and vocal beauty in this Earth Day jam session from heaven! Drawing inspiration from the slack key masters, especially Gabby “Pops” Pahinui and his Hawaiian Band, this is the kind of music that ONLY happens on the ʻāina- rarely onstage- and not to be missed! Makana will open with a performance of unreleased songs celebrating the dynamics of humanityʻs releationship with Mother Earth, then to be joined by Last Jerónimo of Veracruz, Mexico- a master of traditional son jarocho music- a cousin of Hawaiian music- connecting the roots of our two cultures. Keale will share Kānaka insights surrounding our relationship with Mother Earth (Papahānaumoku).. and everyone will hui pū (come together) in a grand jam session celebrating our beautiful cultural heritage and this wahi pana (special place)- Hawaiʻi. One show, one time, on Earth Day- see you there! PS ONLY get tickets from the link- not other scam sites! Or call Blue Note Hawaiʻi at (808) 777-4890. Tickets are $35-$45.

Aloha. Makana's guitar skills & precision plus his voice transcend my emotions to an interesting, unique, and special place that not many musicians can. I sat in my seat C3 at Kahilu Theatre experiencing joy, tears, laughter, comfort, heartfelt, and amazed for the entire show. I was so glad Makana took his time to meet us after the show and I was able to let him know just how I felt, I sincerely felt his warm welcome and genuine kindness with a big hug that I was grateful for! It's my third Makana show and all of them have been uniquely different, all enjoyable and amazing! He had mentioned during the show that he has been taking vocal lessons and said "He truly feels like it's just a beginning for his musical journey." I truly believe that! I just got a chicken skin! Mahalo Makana! See you next time you are on the Big Island! Looking forward to your journey! Aloha! Sincerely, Seishi Saegusa

Born and raised on O'ahu, Hawai’i, Makana is an internationally acclaimed slack key guitarist, singer, composer, and activist. He has been called: “the greatest living player” by Esquire magazine; “a dynamic force” by The New York Times; “master of the Hawaiian slack-key guitar” by The Seattle Times. The prestigious National Geographic Society notes that he is “charting a new sonic frontier with deep ties to tradition.” Makana’s captivating and wide-ranging performance style has led him to share the stage with Jason Mraz, Gotye and Jack Johnson, open for music legends diverse as Sting, Carlos Santana, Elvis Costello, Leon Russell, Common, and No Doubt as well as perform in venues ranging from Asian and European opera houses to The White House.

A student of the legendary Hawaiian slack key guitar master Sonny Chillingworth, his music ranges from traditional to highly original, exploring a broad spectrum of genres, styles and themes. Makana's songs have been featured on 3 Grammy-nominated albums: “Hawaiian Slack Key Kings, Vol. 1 and 2,” and the soundtrack for the Academy Award winning movie “The Descendants”. Makana’s score of a national campaign for the Hawai‘i Visitors and Convention Bureau won a Pele Award, Hawai‘i’s top award for excellence in advertising and design. The Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, considered the Grammys of Hawaiian music, awarded him the “Slack Key Legacy Award” in 2012.
