About this concert
On Wednesday 17th April, we are delighted to be joined by Dan Whitehouse as he starts his 'A Night Of Glass' tour!
“You use a glass mirror to see your face; you use works of art to see your soul”, George Bernard Shaw.
Over the past two years, acclaimed Black Country singer-songwriter Dan Whitehouse has been in a transparently reflective mood with three albums all themed around the physical and metaphorical nature of glass.
Voices From The Cones, is a folk charting, award-nominated collection of music that approached glass through a different lens. The Arts Council funded radio ballads styled project commemorates the history and legacy of glassmaking in Stourbridge in the heart of the Midlands, the epicentre of the nation’s glassmaking industry for over 400 years. A social history song cycle, the songs draw on both interviews and oral archive material, both playful and poignant, from some 100 former glassworkers who had been the industry’s molten heart - the Stourbridge Glass Museum is one of our museum partners for this exhibition.
Songs from across all three projects - Voices From the Cones, The Glass Age and Reflections On The Glass Age, have now been gathered together for ‘A Night Of Glass’, a simple but hypnotic live experience in which Whitehouse takes the audience deep into the heart of glass in its myriad manifestations, his expressively nuanced crystalline vocals, a hint of Bowie here, a touch of Cohen there, effortlessly mining a wealth of emotions and ideas.

2022 the International Year of Glass - Dan is focusing on two album releases, serendipitously glass related (at opposite ends of the spectrum).
The Glass Age - songs which look at how our human experience and ways of connecting have changed through the ‘glass’, the screens, of virtual meetings and communication.
‘Voices From The Cones’ - an Arts Council funded Midlands-centric song-cycle which tells the stories of the community of glassworkers of the Stourbridge glass factory which closed in 1992. An important part of our industrial and social history.
