2120 Biography
2120 is a rock group based in the Mile End borough of Montréal. Born in Sherbrooke, Québec, brothers Maxime and Gabriel Blackburn started playing together at a young age. They completed the line-up in 2015 with the inclusion of class-clown-turned-frontman Billy St. Onge, and took on the moniker of 2120, shortly thereafter relocating the group to Montréal.
Their debut album, 2120 in Spectacular Physical Health, appeared in the Spring of 2022. Produced by the renowned Jace Lasek (Arcade Fire, Patrick Watson, SUUNS) it features ten sharp, punchy songs. Leitmotivs and harmonic palettes deploy within the songs’ opening seconds, serving as the bedrock of a process that display a degree of cohesion and refinement evoking a unique yet no less intoxicating combination of Brahms and American pop. The confessional, reflective lyrics are interpreted by singer Billy St. Onge, whose voice and presence has been likened to James Brown for its audacity and David Bowie for its irresistible energy by Amélie Revert of le Canal Auditif. He is the kind of singer that can crystallize a text into material form, transforming mere words into a physical, palpable experience.
Following a string of shows across Montreal’s concert halls, bars and alleyways in the summer of 2022, 2120 then hunkered down to record a new self-produced single. Entitled Tell Me How or When, the song delivers sophisticated melodies and sonic effects enshrouded in pop psychedelia.
