Najee Janey

Hailing from Boston, rapper/singer/songwriter Najee Janey, a three-time Boston Music Award nominee for Best R&B and Unsigned Artist of the Year who has also published songs for HBO’s sitcom RAPSH!T and Tyler Perry’s SISTAS, continues to trailblaze a new music genre of “hip hop soul” with the release of his long awaited project – “Break Free”.

This latest 7 track EP comes on the heels of Najee’s past powerfully rhythmic projects including “Blue Manifesto” and “Purple Earth Theory.” Break Free is a soulful fusion of hip hop, R&B, and funk with a tinge of reggae, reminiscent of his musical influences of Prince, James Brown, and Biggie Smalls.

From the hypnotically, pulsating “Head to the Sky”, a melodic ode to the power of positive thinking, to the super funky, highway driving groove of “West Coast Ruff”, his uniquely raw, honest, and inspiring sound, blurring the lines between his sweet falsetto swing and catchy rap versus, can’t be boxed in. “It’s the representation and symbolism of freely not caring about what the world thinks of you. I wanted to create an album that would inspire those listening to muster up the courage to follow their dreams no matter what obstacles may be standing in the way…Each song correlates to a theme of breaking free,” Najee says.

Najee was a local headliner for Boston Calling Music Festival last year, and has collaborated and written songs for Atlanta Records’ own Sebastian Mikael, which charted on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay list. He has been cited as a “prolific performing artist” in the music industry and has received mentions in Rolling Stone, Variety, Boston Globe, Paste Magazine, Vanyaland and many more. He was also pegged by Converse to design his own customized Converse By You Chuck 70 sneaker. When asked what’s next, Najee says, “Stay tuned, I’m just getting started.”
