About this concert
The award winning Bookshop Band came to life as an artistic collaboration with its local bookshop in Bath in 2010. The members of the band write and perform songs inspired by books and have released 13 book-inspired albums, collaborating with over 100 authors including Philip Pullman, Louis de Bernieres and Margaret Atwood. Between them Beth Porter and Ben Please bring the books to the stage together with a multitude of instruments, including cello, harmonium, glockenspiel, guitar and ukulele. No previous knowledge of the books is required as the band guide the audience through the stories behind each song’s inspiration. The band has toured extensively around the UK, Europe, Canada and America and is equally at home in a bookshop or literary festival, arts centre or folk club, or on a festival main-stage. ‍ Beth has also performed and recorded with Peter Gabriel and The Proclaimers and is part of The Lost Words Spell Songs.

The Bookshop Band Biography

The Bookshop Band - the offspring of an artistic love-affair between a group of award winning songwriters / composers and an independent bookshop in the UK, Mr B's Emporium of Reading Delights, who curate most of the books that inspire the band's songs.

Ben Please & Beth Porter have now worked with hundreds of authors since they began in 2010, and toured all over the world. This year they are releasing their 14th studio album, EMERGE, RETURN, produced by music legend, Pete Townshend (The Who), and with cover art by Stanley Donwood. It is out on June 28th, during Indie Booksellers' Week, and the band will be performing all over the UK. The album features songs inspired by:

The Testaments, by Margaret Atwood
The Book Of Dust: La Belle Sauvage, by Philip Pullman
The Vanishing Hours, by Barney Norris
Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley
Underland, by Robert Macfarlane
Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Brontë & Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
The Diary of a Bookseller, by Shaun Bythell
The High Mountains of Portugal, by Yann Martel
The Orphans of the Carnival, by Carol Birch
