The Flip Phones Biography
The Flip Phones blend modern musical stylings with classical inspiration to create quirky songs with catchy melodies. Their debut album, Better in the Dark, exists in the Venn diagram intersection of indie, rock, and folk music. Imagine the melodica stylings of Gorillaz crossed with the songwriting of Neko Case and a twist of lyrical luminaries The Decemberists.
Music by The Flip Phones challenges listeners to ponder little moments and big questions, all while not taking anything too seriously. Telling tales from the world around us helps us reflect on our own stories, and, we hope, helps listeners understand theirs as well.
Ryan (guitar, vocals) is a self-taught musician who grew up trying to emulate The Beatles, The Kinks, and Blur. He draws on these influences and more when devising unconventional chord progressions and arrangements, challenging The Flip Phones to innovate with sound and form.
Ryan’s musical background complements Lindsey’s years of classical piano lessons and stints in symphonic and marching bands. Lindsey (keyboard, flute, melodica, vocals) builds on the intriguing guitar parts, crafting melodies and hooks into fledgling earworms. She never forgot her strong roots in music theory, sometimes throwing in triplets and other musical flourishes.
Similar to Odysseyeus’s journeys, the songs on Better in the Dark explore concepts of wandering and homecoming as well as the tension between humans vs. nature and darkness vs. light. Better in the Dark loosely tells the story of a couple who connect in the city, explore the universe together, and find their way back home to each other while drawing inspiration from real-world experiences and stories in the news.
Signature tracks “Man-Made Moon” and “Fly Back to You” capture the essence of The Flip Phones’ spirit. These songs are available now on all platforms, and Better in the Dark is out December 2, 2022.
