Hani Abbasi Biography

Hani Abbasi is a London-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, originally from Ilkley, West Yorkshire. In the mid 2010s he relocated to China where he became part of the underground arts and music scene in Shanghai. An eclectic alternative rock live act named Hani And The Eaters formed around him, and from this period his debut album The Polar Route was born.

Hani’s songs fuse Stones narco-swagger, lyrical drive akin to Suede and the Manic Street Preachers, and an eclectic array of influences affecting his unique approach to guitar music, including Nile Rodgers, Joe Meek’s late 50s productions, J Dilla, Aphex Twin, and all things David Bowie.

The Polar Route, written and recorded in Suzhou, was released in 2018. A&R Factory described the lead single 'Strange Snake' as “futuristic Britpop”, and MusicNews.com stated that “for a debut album it is quite remarkable”. A surreal music video for 'Strange Snake' inspired by The Dear Hunter was shot on location in Suzhou and directed by English filmmaker and Hani's frequent collaborator Jim Peakman. Watch the video here.

Hani's forthcoming second album When In London, an album about the psychology of ultra-modern unreligious times and influenced by Underworld, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Jane's Addiction, and Hani's continued "futuristic Britpop" ...is due for release in late 2021.
