About this concert
Resolution 88 celebrate the release of their new album ‘Vortex’ at Peggy’s Skylight – this is your chance to catch the band live and get the new album on 180g vinyl & CD. ‘Vortex’ is the 4th studio album released by Resolution 88 and with live shows supporting Snarky Puppy, Roy Ayers, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, Larry Mizell & the Blackbyrds, Butcher Brown, the Yellowjackets and many more, Resolution 88 have established themselves as one of the UK’s leading exponents of funk jazz. Their music is synonymous with the beautiful sound of the Fender Rhodes. For their new album ‘Vortex’, bandleader and composer Tom O’Grady went all-out to recreate the sound world from his favourite Mizell Brothers productions and Herbie Hancock records – everything you hear on this album, from the Mellotron to the Echoplex, from to the Oberheim 4 Voice to the glockenspiel – is the real thing. The artwork was beautifully painted by Tokio Aoyama, inspired by the title track ‘Vortex’ and as a homage to the works of other Japanese artists such as ‘Nobuhiro Nakanishi’ who painted the cover of Herbie Hancock’s live album ‘Flood’.

What fans are saying

November 20th 2022
Resolution 88 are awesome - great, finally sound, big energy and super talented all round! I would recommend people seeing them whenever they gig about which, in my opinion, is never often enough. I would say the venue is slightly annoying in that it is difficult to get full views of the stage area due to a big pillar in the middle, which is a bit frustrating.

Resolution 88 Biography

"Band On The Rise."
Larry Mizell

“Serious Music For Music Lovers.”
Kaidi Tatham

"Wow. Soulful music, played with passion and incredible skill. This harkens to the best funk-jazz of the sixties and seventies and takes it to a new level. Think Headhunters for the new millennium."
Bob Power (The Roots, Erykah Badu, D'Angelo...) NY

"This is the best thing I have heard for ages!" - Eddie Piller (Acid Jazz Records)

"Resolution 88 ... this is an exciting young band from Cambridge who take their influence from the immensely important, barrier-breaking mid 70's funk jazzer Herbie Hancock & the Headhunters - they've come out of nowhere at the last minute! There's absolutely no-one around at all like these guys at the moment!"
Craig Charles (The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show)

“Your second album defines you and asks questions to which the answers can only be found in the creative process of making it.
Here Resolution 88 not only find the answers but elevate their game, they have ideas and they project them in an album that is beautifully crafted and captivating listening throughout!”
Bluey of Incognito.

"Resolution 88 have gone with the ... influence of mid-70's Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters and do it in the most heavyweight, sincere and unique way."
Snowboy (Blues & Soul Magazine)

"Hunter gatherers they most definitely are and congratulations for bringing classic jazz funk back from the wilderness."
Emrys Baird (Blues & Soul Magazine)

With the release of their first two albums and live shows supporting Snarky Puppy, Roy Ayers, Marcus Miller, Larry Mizell & the Blackbyrds, Butcher Brown, Yellowjackets and more, Resolution 88 have already established themselves as one of the UK’s leading exponents of funk jazz. Their music is synonymous with the silky, buttery sound of the Fender Rhodes. They’re also a bona fide band, a refreshing change in a musical world increasingly occupied by online collaborations and viral videos. They’re best mates who love to hang out, play together and make their own music - that sincerity is evident in their songs and their chemistry on stage.

‘Revolutions’ represents a lot of firsts - the first time Resolution 88 have recorded to multi-track tape, the first time that they’ve included a real string and brass section, the first time they’ve included special guests on record and the first time they’ve pressed an album on vinyl. Imagine a combination of an undiscovered Herbie Hancock album from the mid’ 70’s, rare-groove samples from the golden era of hip hop (ATCQ, Pharcyde etc) and the new London sound of bands like Yussef Kamaal.
