About this concert
Mat Jodrell (trumpet), Carl Mackey (alto saxophone), Julien Wilson (tenor saxophone), Theo Carbo (guitar), Andrea Keller (piano), Sam Anning (double bass) & Kyrie Anderson (drums) Celebrating International Jazz Day, the Sam Anning Septet (featuring Jazz & Improvisation sessional and continuing staff) launch ‘Earthen’. This performance will feature special guest Allara Briggs-Pattison. Melbourne bassist-composer Sam Anning’s third septet album Earthen, is dedicated to the indomitable spirit of Indigenous Australian music icon, Uncle Archie Roach. Featuring an ensemble of long-time collaborators, Andrea Keller, Kyrie Anderson, Mat Jodrell, Carl Mackey, Julien Wilson, and Theo Carbo, the album draws on the deep well of Roach’s wisdom, connection to the moment, resilience of spirit, and the medicinal power of music. Anning’s experience as bassist for three years with Roach before his passing in 2022 was a profound and musically enriching journey. Roach was an award-winning singer-songwriter, musician and respected elder, known for his songs that often told powerful, poignant stories about Indigenous Australian experiences, particularly the pain and trauma of the Stolen Generations. The experience offered Anning a unique opportunity to contribute to a powerful legacy of social activism and healing through music, providing a profound connection with his music and his audiences, reflecting on the themes of loss, resilience and hope.

Andrea Keller Piano Biography

Andrea Keller is an Australian pianist, composer, and educator, dedicated to the performance, creation, and nurturing of contemporary jazz and improvised music. Over the past two-decades she has devised and produced a large and varied body of work. Steeped in both jazz and Western art music traditions, her projects are centred on the creation of new music with an emphasis on improvisation and collaboration.

Highly lauded for her music in Australia, Andrea has received numerous awards for her albums, ensembles and compositions, including three ARIA’s, multiple Australian Jazz Bell, and many more.

With a propensity for the ‘new’, Andrea is somewhat of a serial bandleader. Her career to date has seen her lead projects such as Transients, Five Below, Journey Home, Wave Riders, PATSy, Masters & Apprentices, Piano Club, The Composers Circle, Solo/Duo/Trio, Celebrating Voice, Still Night: Music in Poetry, The Komeda Project, The Company of Pianos, From Ether, Family Portraits, Three Lanes, The Andrea Keller Quintet/Quartet, The Wayne Shorter Project, and The Bartok Project.

In addition to her own ensembles and projects, Andrea has performed, composed, and arranged for artists and ensembles such as Lano & Woodley, the Song Company, Eddie Perfect, the Black Arm Band, the Australian Art Orchestra, Ten Part Invention, and many more.

“By any measure, Andrea Keller is an extraordinary musician and her latest release, Life is Brut[if]al is the proof of the pudding. This is music for our times, and it reflects her well-documented and highly original creative journey… This artist has a work ethic that few can equal, and we are the beneficiaries.” (John Fenton 2020)

“The image of angels dancing on a pinhead is what comes to mind when describing certain albums by Andrea Keller. The pianist has a way of condensing epic passages into unassuming vignettes, as if there’s no expression so massive that it can’t be captured as a concise, perfect impression to be cupped in the palm of your hand.” (Dave Sumner 2020)

“Andrea Keller stretches jazz into whatever she wants here – as a composer, musician and visionary, she always has. Using many of the most noble aspects of modern jazz – its curiosity, freedom and genre-inclusive nature – Keller enriches and expands the form. It is always a thrill to see where she goes next.” (John Hardaker 2018)

“This is totally original music; by that read no one else composes anything like this.”
(Michael Prescott 2014)

“It is only when one hears music this brave and fantastically new that one is hit – yes: an intake of breath, a stab of joy and a little shiver of fear – with the realisation that there are still new languages to be heard, new seas to cross. And it just reaffirms one’s faith in jazz, art and human courage that little sweet bit more.” (John Hardaker 2013)

“Keller has one of Australia’s most consistently interesting musical minds.” (Doug Spencer 2007)
