I LIKE TO SLEEP Biography
The award-winning and acclaimed powerjazz-trio I LIKE TO SLEEP from Trondheim, consisting of Amund Storløkken Åse (vibraphone & mellotron), Nicolas Leirtrø (baritone guitar) and Øyvind Leite (drums) have taking the Norwegian Rock and Jazz Scene by storm the last 10 years as one of the most hard hitting and surprising bands.
With 100 concerts on most of the rock and jazz clubs in the country, several international festivals such as Roadburn, Pstereo, Tampere Jazz Happening, and 3 albums on Rune Grammofon, the trio have been pushing the music in new directions in between rock and jazz - this with the mantra “Powerjazz To The People''.
On April 12 the band is releasing their fourth studio album, this time back on their first label - the Trondheim-based All Good Clean Records!
ILTS is collecting inspiration from a wide range of musical directions like the 60's spiritual free jazz and Alice Coltrane, oldschool prog rock and King Crimson, Olivier Messiaen, Motorpsycho and many other directions.
During Moldejazz 2023 ILTS was awarded the biggest scholarship and prize for music - SpareBank 1 SMN JazZtipendiat to write a commissioned piece for ILTS & the legendary Trondheim Jazz Orchestra with an economical frame of 1 million Norwegian kroners. They also won the Norwegian competition Jazzintro - "The Young Norwegian Jazz Musicians of the Year" with a cash prize.
"Trondheim’s I LIKE TO SLEEP have coined their craft “powerjazz to the people”, which sums their music up to a tee. They forgo chin-stroking snobbery with a no nonsense barrage of doom-metal riffs, tectonic drum explosions, and metallic droning, courtesy of a vibraphone – an instrument commonly associated with easy listening. "
As you may have guessed by now, I LIKE TO SLEEP, despite their chosen name (after a famous Thelonious Monk quote), make anything but relaxing music. Their tracks sound like natural disasters gaining sentience, rumbling like some kind of colossal sedimentary engine. Applying the (lack of ) rules of free-jazz to heavier styles, these Norwegians are a live force to be reckoned with. It’s hard to imagine a sound as robust as this coming from just a baritone guitar, drum set and the aforementioned vibraphone. But make no mistake, I LIKE TO SLEEP are just as compelling when they simmer in atmospheric stillness, deftly flirting with elements of classical, jazz and folk music. A cataclysmic wonder of a band.
