Platinum-Selling Grammy-Nominated Jazz Singer Stacey Kent in Concert: Two Love Stories
Saturday August 10th, 2024 @ 7:00PM - 8:30PM
Why is two-million-album-selling artist Stacey Kent coming to perform at a cozy bookstore in Frenchtown? And what does it all have to do with Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro? The answer is in two love stories.
Twenty-five years ago, on the radio show "Desert Island Discs," Ishiguro revealed that he loved Stacey Kent's music and would want her albums with him if he were ever shipwrecked. He calls her "a singer to match the greats of the past." Meanwhile, Kent had loved Ishiguro's novels for years.
A fond friendship followed, and Ishiguro began to write lyrics for Kent to perform in concert, paired with music by her husband Jim Tomlinson. Now, sixteen of Ishiguro's lyrics have been turned into an illustrated book, "The Summer We Crossed Europe In The Rain," to be published by A.A. Knopf on April 30.
The second love story is between Stacey Kent and her beloved sister, Penelope, who lives in the Frenchtown area. In between playing at the Blue Note Festival in Paris or the Coliseu in Porto or weeklong residencies at Birdland, Stacey makes certain to visit Penelope. And, Penelope loves the Bookshop. Magic!
At this very special event, Stacey, with Jim Tomlinson on flutes and saxophone, and pianist Art Hirahara on piano, will perform a full concert and Stacey will sign copies of the book.
Video. Tickets ($50) include the concert and a signed copy of the book. Weather permitting, this concert will be outdoors in the Reading Garden.

Stacey Kent Biography
"Her voice is sometimes a whisper, sometimes a confiding murmur, sometimes an exhilarated exclamation; but whatever the idiom or the mood, individual listeners frequently feel that Stacey’s music was intended for their ears only." -- Bang & Olufsen Magazine
