About this concert
The Old Church Moon Series & Holy Volcano present Gregory Allison & Slow Meadow, two composers working in the neoclassical realm. The New Moon Series celebrates intentional healing through sound, creative visuals, and presence of mind inside Portland’s own Sanctuary of Sound. Each concert in the series is carefully booked to coincide with either the Full or New Moon. Gregory Allison creates with a single violin a sound that travels across great landscapes. He has toured the world with violin in hand and is endlessly inspired by the instrument’s journey around the globe, especially it’s use in South Indian Classical music. His live performance blends the Indian Classical melodic improvisation with his classical sensibility as a film composer, offering the listener a sonic journey through time and space. He will performing his 2021 debut album Portal in its entirety, along with new compositions for amplified violin and string quartet. Slow Meadow is Houston multi-instrumentalist Matt Kidd. Kidd's releases as Slow Meadow have been celebrated by the New York Observer, NPR's Stephen Thompson, Echoes' John Diliberto, and who sampled Lachrymosia for the platinum-selling song on his debut album, FREE 6LACK. In 2022, Kidd provided the original soundtrack to the Selena Gomez film, "My Mind & Me". He will be performing selections from his 10-year discography for piano and string quartet, with visuals projected on the walls of the Church organ. Opening ambient set by very special surprise guest DJ!

Slow Meadow Biography

The Houston multi-instrumentalist Matt Kidd, who writes pastoral, deeply felt compositions as Slow Meadow, released the 43-minute LP Costero on November 17. Kidd's releases as Slow Meadow have been celebrated by the New York Observer, NPR's Stephen Thompson, Echoes' John Diliberto, and 6LACK who sampled Lachrymosia for Luving U on his debut album, FREE 6LACK.

Tracked at Sonic Ranch (Beach House, Explosions In The Sky) on the border of Mexico and Texas, as well as a friend's home in northern Alabama, Costero is a spare and wistful collection of sketches for piano and string quartet, yet it's also immutably lush: One can hear in Kidd's soft focus motifs connections to contemporary minimalists such as Goldmund and Nils Frahm just as easily as the Romantic-era lions Erik Satie and Frédéric Chopin.

Costero — Spanish for "coastal," a nod to the collection's preoccupation with figurative boundaries — will be released on vinyl and digitally, with one additional track. The French illustrator Jan Garet contributed original pieces for each of Costero's ten songs, and the record was mastered by James Plotkin (Stars Of The Lid, Tim Hecker).
