About this concert
A rare intimate double header from two groundbreaking mucisal ensembles. Threepenny Bit use traditional dance music as the jumping-off point for their adventures in sound, with the eight members' patchwork of influences sewn into the lining of every tune. Their bold arrangements move between light and shade, intimacy and bombast, but always with compelling rhythm and harmony at the core. No idea is off limits as long as it catches the ear and animates the feet. Brickwork Lizards are a cinematic Arabic jazz ensemble based in Oxford. Their unique combination of pre-war, gin-joint jazz and traditional Middle Eastern music has been championed on BBC6 Music by Don Letts and Tom Robinson. The Lizards' latest album 'Haneen' was described as “a joyful bound across time, soaking up lines, melodies, riffs and the atmosphere of a shellac scratchy tea dance one minute, a lavishly decorated, carpeted seraglio the next.

Threepenny Bit Biography

Hampshire-based Threepenny Bit are an example of how traditional dance tunes and contemporary sounds can be blended into a fresh interpretation of folk music. This dynamic eight-piece band combines a group of diehard folkies with some of the finest young jazz and classical musicians in the south. They play bold arrangements of traditional and original tunes with infectious stage energy for concerts and ceilidh dancing.

After founding and running the Southampton University folk society in 2011 they formed a busking band to take folk music to the streets for a summer holiday. 4 years, 3 albums and a host of successful concert, ceilidh, folk club and festival performances later the band are still going strong! 2014 saw the release of their third album 'Pantomime Cannon' to critical acclaim.

Bursting with Energy
Martin Chilton, The Telegraph

The most head-spinningly original album to emerge from the current crop of young folk collectives this year… Forget nodding along approvingly, this is an all-out musical bombardment
Rob Fearnly, Bright Young Folk

Their sound blends traditional with self-penned into a wash of dance tunes ranging from mildly energetic through decidedly graceful to seizure-inducing fanaticism. This is far more than casual toe-tapping interest it’s full-on engagement from the outset.
Tim Carroll, FolkWords

It’s addictive stuff as forays into rock and jazz blend with interpretations of trad British Dances
The Musician
