"Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley shred..." -Rolling Stone "Two musical phenoms" -NPR "I'm sure I don't make a true 'critic' since I'm already such a fan, but this album from Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley is a wonderful piece of work. And my songwriting side is truly overwhelmed. Thank you, thank you, thank you." -Merle Haggard "Living In A Song is another winner from dynamic roots duo Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley...the duo showcases their classic country songwriting skills on their latest...Ickes and Hensley have served notice that they are a force to be reckoned with, now and in the future." -Acoustic Guitar "An acoustic firestorm...Ickes & Hensley are changing the rules..." -Vintage Guitar "Dual lightning strikes in a bottle…" -Guitar Player "Living In A Song showcases these two brilliant instrumentalists who elevate any song they play to stratospheric levels. Indeed, the title of Living In A Song is just right. The duo dwells in these songs, creating spacious sonic architectures with their spiraling instrumental work and capturing the emotional resonance of the lyrics. As did their previous albums, Living In A Song showcases two musicians playing with creative intuition and invention, always finding the melodies that fit the lyrics, that wring emotion from the words." -Folk Alley "Two of the finest musicians playing today" -No Depression Take Rob Ickes, the most decorated musician in IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Awards history with 15 Dobro Player of the Year wins, and 2023 IBMA Guitar Player of the Year Trey Hensley, a Tennessee-born guitar prodigy identified as “Nashville's hottest young player” by Acoustic Guitar magazine and you have Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley, a powerhouse GRAMMY®-nominated acoustic duo that has electrified the acoustic music scene. Known for their white-hot picking (as Acoustic Guitar puts it: "steel-string bluegrass with all the intensity of rock 'n' roll") and world class musicianship, as well as their soulful stone country vocals and top-shelf, always emotive songwriting, Ickes & Hensley cleverly meld bluegrass, country, blues, rock, jam grass, and more to create a signature musical blend that defies restrictions of genre. Ickes & Hensley have collaborated with Vince Gill, Rodney Crowell, Taj Mahal, Marty Stuart, Steve Wariner, Tommy Emmanuel (including touring and the release of an EP together), Little Feat, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, David Grisman, Molly Tuttle, Jorma Kaukonen, and Hot Tuna, among many others. Ickes, a native of the San Francisco Bay Area, former founding member of bluegrass "supergroup" Blue Highway and highly sought-after Dobro master, has graced the recordings and concerts of artists such as Merle Haggard, Alison Krauss, Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, Earl Scruggs, Tony Rice and many more. Ickes was a key member of Willie Nelson's band for the GRAMMY®-nominated 2023 Willie Nelson album, Bluegrass. Hensley made his Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 11, performing with Marty Stuart and Earl Scruggs (thanks to an invite from Stuart), and has since appeared on stage with the likes of Johnny Cash, Peter Frampton, Charlie Daniels and Old Crow Medicine Show. Influenced by repertoires as diverse as The Allman Brothers Band, Ray Charles, Merle Haggard and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Hensley was chosen to perform in December 2022 as part of special 2-night-only engagement with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and many special guests celebrating the 50 Anniversary of Will The Circle Be Unbroken at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville. Frequent performers at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Rob & Trey can also be seen elsewhere nationwide on television: PBS' "David Holt's State of Music" and RFD-TV's Emmy-nominated TV series, "My Bluegrass Story." The new critically acclaimed, song-centric Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley album, Living In A Song—produced by GRAMMY® Award-winning producer/engineer/songwriter Brent Maher (The Judds, Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard, Kenny Rogers, Tina Turner)—highlights Rob & Trey's songcraft like never before. Living In A Song was a Top 5 Bluegrass album, Top 10 Americana album and Top 40 Current Country album. Their headline Living In A Song Tour 2023 has also included performances with Little Feat, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Rodney Crowell, and Jorma Kaukonen. On October 27, 2023, a project entitled A Tribute To The Judds was released worldwide by BMG. Ickes and Hensley collaborated with Molly Tuttle on "John Deere Tractor," which was featured on the album, alongside an all-star artist cast including Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton, Lainey Wilson, Carly Pearce, Gabby Barrett, Cody Johnson, Ashley McBryde and many more. On March 8, 2024, the live recording "Swingin' Live at the Church in Tulsa" by the Taj Mahal Sextet (featuring Rob & Trey as featured band members) will be released. Excellent show by two incredible and versatile musicians that expand beyond the standard bluegrass genre while still staying true to their acoustic instruments. The folks in Laramie were very fortunate to have such a quality performance, and it was free.

Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley Biography

Take a 15-time IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Resophonic Guitar Player of the Year and a Tennessee-born guitar prodigy called “Nashville's hottest young player” by Acoustic Guitar magazine, and you have Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley, a powerhouse acoustic duo that has electrified the acoustic music scene around the world. Known for their white-hot picking and world class musicianship, as well as their soulful stone country vocals, the GRAMMY®-nominated duo cleverly and uniquely melds bluegrass, country, blues, rock, jamgrass, and string band music of all kinds to create a signature blend of music that defies restrictions of genre. NPR has called Ickes and Hensley "two musical phenoms"; Vintage Guitar raved they're an "acoustic firestorm" who "are changing the rules"; Acoustic Guitar describes their sound as "steel-string bluegrass with all the intensity of rock 'n' roll" and No Depression observed they're "two of the finest musicians playing today." Ickes and Hensley have shared the stage or collaborated with Tommy Emmanuel, Taj Mahal, Vince Gill, David Grisman, Jorma Kaukonen, Marty Stuart, and Steve Wariner—all admirers of the duo. Ickes, former founding member of bluegrass "supergroup" Blue Highway and highly sought-after Dobro master, has graced the recordings and concerts of artists such as Earl Scruggs, Merle Haggard, Alison Krauss, Tony Rice and more. Hensley, who earned his first IBMA Guitar Player of the Year nomination in 2020, made his Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 11 (thanks to an invite from Marty Stuart with Earl Scruggs...the video of the event has surpassed 1 million views on YouTube) and has appeared on stage with the likes of Johnny Cash, Peter Frampton and Old Crow Medicine Show. All three of the Compass Records albums released by Ickes and Hensley have received widespread acclaim, including their debut BEFORE THE SUN GOES DOWN, which garnered a GRAMMY® nomination, and the combo's most recent release WORLD FULL OF BLUES, which features collaborations with Vince Gill and Taj Mahal. Ickes and Hensley recently teamed with guitar master Tommy Emmanuel for a very special EP, TOMMY EMMANUEL - ACCOMPLICE SERIES VOL. I WITH ROB ICKES AND TREY HENSLEY. The EP was released May 7, 2021 to critical acclaim. The three high-powered guitar virtuosos performed together on the Grand Ole Opry on May 8, 2021 and from famed Nashville venue 3rd & Lindsley on May 9, 2021 via worldwide broadcasts to celebrate the release of the project. Ickes and Hensley are busy at work on their fourth duo record for Compass Records with GRAMMY®-winning producer Brent Maher.
