About this concert
Reg Meuross: Fire And Dust The Woody Guthrie Story Reg Meuross and Geraint Hughes - Album Preview Show The breadth and depth of Reg Meuross’s material is unparalleled in contemporary folk: songs about forgotten heroes, famous names, folk legends, the climate emergency, tales from the kitchen sink and news from the world stage. If something needs to be sung about then Reg Meuross has a song for it - with Fire & Dust focused on the life and times of the ‘Dustbowl’ American folk musician and political activist Woody Guthrie - whose work remains highly influential today. In 2019, Pete Townsend from The Who commissioned Reg to write this song cycle telling Guthrie’s life story. Aimed at all music lovers, fans of Reg and those interested in the ongoing social impact of Guthrie’s songs today, this new set of songs shows Meuross at his absolute best - sharing stories from social history that are still highly relevant. Fire & Dust (to be released in 2025) is a journey into the heart and soul of one of America’s finest folk musicians. Highlighting racism, bigotry, corruption and inequality - Meuross draws parallels between Guthrie’s time & our own, masterfully accompanying himself on his ‘44 Martin six-string guitar, harmonica, banjo and dulcimer whilst captivating audiences with his beautiful tenor voice. Reg is joined by Welsh singer, songwriter, pianist and accordionist Geraint Watkins who also features on the album. Geraint has backed many notable artists, including Nick Lowe, Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler, Paul McCartney, and even Status Quo! He was a touring member of Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings and keyboard player with ex-Fleetwood Mac Peter Green’s Splinter Group.

Reg Meuross Biography

Reg Meuross is a true modern troubadour, representing contemporary English folk writing at its best. “There’s something special about the way he writes and delivers a song” Townes Van Zandt. In the mid-1980s Reg Meuross formed the Panic Brothers with Richard Morton, mixing Americana with humour and slick harmonies. Then came the Flamingos, Hank Wangford, and now 14 highly acclaimed solo albums have established his songs as ‘the hinges upon which swing the doors of perceptive English folk’ (Folkwords).

Reg’s songs comment bravely on life as he sees it, bringing wide ranging stories from the ghosts of WW1 soldiers to the ravages of dementia, and some of the most beautifully disarming songs and lyrics ever written. Reg has that rare gift of being able to touch people, through his songs and performance, on a really human level. His words and music paint pictures that remain with the listener long after the song has been sung.

“Meuross, quite simply, is one of the best”
Malcolm Carter, Pennyblack Music
“Powerful and moving songwriting” Martin Chilton, The Telegraph
“A mighty songwriter and an equally fine singer” Martin Carthy
