About this concert
Five years since their last sold-out performance, the exquisite voice-and-viol partnership of countertenor Iestyn Davies and early-music stalwarts Fretwork returns. They perform selections from their breathtaking Lamento album that comprises 17th-century German pieces for viol consort and voice—including works by J. C. Bach, Tunder, Scheidt, Schein, Buxtehude, and more—with organ and virginals player Silas W-llston adding to the music’s warm resonance. “The purity of [Davies’s] voice, with its rich palette of inflections, and his communication of the text, makes this ideal repertoire for him, and us,” writes The Guardian.

Amazing Iestyn Davies was in great voice tonight and the Lute was played with great delicacy and precision: breathtaking overall and gripping.
Simply loved the aria from Saul at the end. It’ll mean another visit to see it for the fourth time next summer at Glyndebourne. Ideas for a second encore might have been “I know a bank ..” sung by Oberon in Midsummer Night’s Dream from his stunning Garsington performance this summer but you can’t have everything! Keep up the good work - been following your career for many years.
