About this concert
This year’s special commission is by award-winning fiddler Robbie Greig. Everyone’s Welcome to Edinburgh celebrates the tunes and songs that hail from and celebrate our famed capital city. Edinburgh’s vibrant folk scene has produced some of Scotland’s leading singers and instrumentalists over the years, some featured in the very special band we have put together for the show, and the east of Scotland in general has a rich cultural fabric at its core. While many may argue that Scotland’s traditional hub has moved to Glasgow in recent times, it is vital not to overlook the vibrancy and innovation Edinburgh has contributed to the scene (and is still contributing). Expect tunes old and new in the show : from music heard in the Old Town in the 1700s to protest songs from the miner’s strike that hit the Lothians in the 1980s. There’ll be a fair smattering of those tunes heard at sessions in city’s bars from the 1990s to the present day, and some new compositions from the band.

Hannah Rarity Biography

Singer and songwriter Hannah Rarity combines sublime vocal timbre and uncanny interpretive empathy which have earned comparisons to Eva Cassidy and Cara Dillon.

A former winner of the BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year contest, Rarity has toured internationally with US supergroup Cherish the Ladies as well as appearing with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Blazin’ Fiddles, Rura and Niteworks, alongside her solo work.

Widely recognised as a flourishing talent, Hannah was tipped by The Scotsman as ‘One to Watch’ and recently co-musically directed the Opening Concert of Celtic Connections 2022. In a crowded field, she ranks as one of Scotland’s finest young singers, performing a carefully chosen mix of traditional, contemporary and self-penned material.
This year she is celebrating the release of her eagerly anticipated second album ’To Have You Near’.
