Fitzroya Biography
Juan Pablo Orrego Berrios is a Chilean composer, singer-songwriter and sound artist.
He performs his own songs under the stage name Fitzroya.
He describes his music as “Electroacoustic Rock & Folk” and his lyrics, in Spanish, speak of perception, existential thoughts, life experiences, wishes, love, friendship and, above all, the hope for a happy life, short or long.
Juan Pablo obtained a degree in music composition at the Universidad de Chile in 2007. He studied there mainly with Pablo Aranda and Cirilo Vila. Between 2007-2009 he was scholarship holder of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and studied composition with Caspar Johannes Walter at the Stuttgart University of Music in Germany. In 2016 he graduates as Master of Arts Composition & Music Theory at the University of Music Basel in Switzerland, where he studied with Caspar Johannes Walter and Jakob Ullmann.
His works have been performed in numerous artistic projects and Contemporary Music Festivals, including “Klangtaucher – Klingende Interventions im Rheindüker” as part of the “ZeitRäume Basel” biennale for music and architecture (Switzerland, 2015); “Desde Fuera Del Centro”, commission and premiere of “Cumpleaños, music for toys” (Quebrada de Herrera, Chile, 2013); “Community in Progress – Allmonde (Episode 4)” with Kevin Rittberger and Alain Badieu (Theater Basel, 2016) and “Música para cuerdas pulsadas” (music for plucked strings), commissions for several guitar and similar plucked instruments pieces (Chile, 2019), among many others.
Between 2002 and 2010 he was member of the chilean Folk-Rock Band Bombyx Mori, with whom he released 2 albums: “Bombyx Mori” (2002) and “Jardínes Sintéticos” (2006).
2009 co-founder and co-editor of the Chilean independent music publisher “figura partituras”.
He currently lives in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.
